Got out Saturday and almost immediately had a mid-30s fish pull a "Jaws"-style setup where it followed off the bank, dropped underneath the fly (a big gurgler), slowly pitched up so that it was near-vertical, cocked its body into an s-curve, flared its gills a couple of times... I gave the gurgler a little twitch [nothing], long pause [nothing], another twitch [nothing], pause [nothing], ripped it along the surface as if it were fleeing...
...and it decided that it didn't really want to eat it and retreated into the murk. $*#&@!!
I had three more follows on topwater (two of which were nice-sized) before the clouds cleared. All were lying tight to the bank. Couldn't buy a look on anything after that. Adding insult to injury, my dog tangled with a skunk when I let him out on the bank to pee -- so my vehicle is a bit funkier smelling than usual. With the forecast for tomorrow, it looks like it'll be a while before rivers are fishable again...
