3 Strikes....
« on: April 11, 2011, 11:26:32 AM »
And three misses.  ;D Spent a day Sun with Dave and Jarrod and we had some amazing hits just no boated fish. Within the first hour Dave had a large Musky swallow his fly and slice 60 or 80 pound fluro like it was 7x. A little while later I was looking up river and striping when I felt a jolt. I looked down and another large Musky was hot on my fly. He nipped it when I wasn't looking then followed to the boat and swam around for a few figure 8s and big circles before disappearing into the green water. We had a couple of half hearted follows through the mid day and then towards the end of the day I was playing with a new fly when one exploded out of nowhere! I strip set but the fly pulled out. He circled very quickly and made another hard charge but missed it. By them he was at the boat and I got him to swim a few rounds before he too disappeared. I had a great day and even though we didn't boat a fish just seeing them in action makes it worth the next drive up...

Dave is a damn good fly angler, amazing tier and all around interesting guy. I'm looking forward to doing some snorkeling and underwater video together this summer.  Jarrod may even go since he lost his fear of snakes on this trip. We saw a few king Cobras, Eastern Diamondbacks, Cottonmouths, and maybe one Anaconda (could have been a log). He never even went for his pistol. He did grab the paddle a few times though... ;D

Why shucks Mike, them's mighty kind words! I had a blast, though I kept waking up all last night thinking about that first fish. I think it must have gotten a tooth into the terminal perfection loop, so that when I set I was pulling #80 fluoro directly against the tooth. Lesson learned, either keep the loop as small as possible or fish wire (or use Travis' split ring trick).

Here's a couple of those "garter snakes" from a trip to Burma last spring... sorry Jarrod!

Good to hear you all had some action.  Just being able to see the target and swing away means a lot in this sport.

On one hand I wish the water was floatable/fishable in my area, but all the rain will be good for the system long-term...

OH man Dave, thanks so much for sharing the beautiful portraits :) now I know what that last snake I saw was ( a king cobra) although I think the one I saw here at the farm was a little bigger. All joking aside, I had a great time fishing with you guys this weekend, and just for the record, I did boat a nice smallie but somehow my buddy forgot to mention my small portion of success :)

By the way, I am not really afraid of snakes, dead ones anyway :)
I just don't care!

You boys are getting close to boating a fly caught gator sized musky.  Glad you guys got out in good conditions....Every time I get the gear ready, and I find the time to get to the water around here....Boom! Rain, then 8,000 CFS for a week.
I can't wait to see one of these upcoming videos.

Got out Saturday and almost immediately had a mid-30s fish pull a "Jaws"-style setup where it followed off the bank, dropped underneath the fly (a big gurgler), slowly pitched up so that it was near-vertical, cocked its body into an s-curve, flared its gills a couple of times... I gave the gurgler a little twitch [nothing], long pause [nothing], another twitch [nothing], pause [nothing], ripped it along the surface as if it were fleeing...

...and it decided that it didn't really want to eat it and retreated into the murk. $*#&@!!

I had three more follows on topwater (two of which were nice-sized) before the clouds cleared. All were lying tight to the bank. Couldn't buy a look on anything after that. Adding insult to injury, my dog tangled with a skunk when I let him out on the bank to pee -- so my vehicle is a bit funkier smelling than usual. With the forecast for tomorrow, it looks like it'll be a while before rivers are fishable again...

At least you got out. We hit Priest Sun but didn't stay long. The upper lake seems to be turning over or is just messed up pretty bad. Color was waay off and lots of dead fish all around.

This rain is getting old. Guess 60 days of 100 degree heat is next...
