Plateau Report 6-1 to 6-4
« on: June 05, 2011, 11:06:45 AM »
Made it back down for a few more days and nights of camping and fishing. Water levels were low and clear in the upper river.
Smallmouth were cautious and leader shy. Chartreuse and white clousers would spook the fish as would black streamers. Once I tried a #6 natural rabbit fur sculpin on a 5x tippet, the game was on. Top water offerings did not produce well. Caught a good number of fish and my personal best smallmouth(a black 16"football shaped fish). As luck would have it, my camera sensor died on what was my best smallmouth trip to date.

Wow!  A #6 streamer on 5x - the water must really be clear and the fish skittish!  And a 16" smallie on 5x is no easy task.  Sounds like a good trip, was it hot on the plateau this weekend?

16" bass was caught on a 6 lb tippet early in the morning after I broke it off on smaller tippet the day before. Between the wet wading and cold beer back at camp we managed to stay comfortable. The water was so low at the fords it could be walked across without getting your feet wet.
