Looking for a particular fly reel
« on: September 20, 2011, 02:16:05 PM »
Hi Guys
Got a question for all of you----I am looking for a fly reel that has the so-call free spool, in other words you can touch spin the rim of the reel face and take up large amounts of line in a matter of seconds. Gloomis has this reel but I don't like their design. They are the only ones I have found that carries such a reel. I saw the fly fishing show Trout Unlimited the other day and there was this guy using such a reel. It was amazing how fast he was able to take in line. He had a 20" brown on at the time and he said that the reel he was using was a plus in getting a large fish on the drag quickly---any help is apprcicated.

You can do that with most reels. For example I have done it with my Lamsons and my Tibor.

When I say spin, I am talking about the spool spinning without any noise other than spinning and taking up excess line. My Redington or Orvis does not have that feature nor does any of my buddies reels have that feature. I can take up line reeling with my Redington and Orvis, but not using the fast spin effect.

Just checked on both of these reels and yes they do have the free spool, but both are a little beyond my budget, the Gloomis is 100.00

Most reels you can take off the clicker if you don't want to hear the noise during the spinning process. Have you tried that?

Neither reel I have has that feature, I may go with the Gloomis because it will spin and take the line in a hurry. I was told by a guy at our local lake that the spool on this reel spins with just one touch of the rim.

Loydtruss, I think the reel you are talking about is the Venture.  Decent reel, I had one for a while but is wasn't really fast at line pick up as it isn't a large arbor reel.  I have several reels but only one that offers the free spooling line pick up by palming and spinning the spool of the reel.  If you would like to check it out let me know.  This one is a Cortland Endurance large arbor, not expensive at all.  There are several on the market that do have free spool line pick up but most of them are more expensive.

I'm a little confused by what the guy said "that the spool on this reel spins with just one touch of the rim".  Only reels that I know of that spin with just a touch are the old automatic "tip breaker" reels, and they require touching a lever.  Centerpin reels free spool as well but offer absolutely no drag. just palming.
