Urban Blue Line
« on: October 07, 2011, 06:55:52 PM »
Got out a couple of times this week with out much luck. Hoped to have better luck after hearing Toddro and Yoda's reports! We are seeing good numbers of both small and large mouth, but can't seem to get them to go after our top water offerings or streamers. Fish would either be spooked and swim away or show interest and just follow for a couple of feet.
Any advice?

Water is still clear and the leaves are starting to collect in the slower areas.

Found some great holding spots with lots of structure to give a try next spring.

Hmm, pics show bright blue skies which usually equals poor midday fishing for me.

I would try earlier or later in the day, especially in areas with more shadows on the water.

Also clear water and clear skies clues me to have super fast retrieves or go smaller offerings and very subtle presentations.

I have found that if you see fish and they are not eating what you are throwing is to big.  Right now, I am catching most of fish on 6's and 8's.  Minnow patterns have also been working better then crawfish.  Stay away from the top water until the morning and evening unless the wind is blowing and you are by tall grass or over hanging trees.

great pics

Great pics!!!

I have been having good luck on hoppers and poppers under overhanging trees and near grassy banks, and even better luck with streamers - a #8 Black Wooly Bugger or a large crawfish are producing well for me.

I went out early this morning and had 2 nice smallies hit the crawfish pattern like freight trains - they just crushed it.  I am fishing them on a dead-drft with just a slight twitch or a very slow and erratic retrieve as they drift in quicker water.  Most of the fish I am finding are in water that is moving pretty fast, though not the fastest water in the river.

Same here Todd. Fish are staged in front of and in the fast riffles.

Haha!  I was just thinking on Sunday that I have not seen any gar in their usual haunts in the streams I frequent, and I was wondering what had become of them...  I found Carp Mecca a few weeks ago in a new section of stream I fished, but no Gar Mecca.

Looks like a fun time. Seeing that lotto sign makes me think just how many places like that we just drive everyday.

I gotta check more of those out before they are all gone.

Do you ever fish for them, Mike?  Certain times of the year, my local streams are loaded with them.  I have used the "gar flies" before, but I prefer to try to hook them.

Todd when I lived in GA I fished for them all the time below Oconee Dam. The local folks thought I was crazy for messing with them toothy fish. I used a snare with a shiner and it was pretty effective. Those were pretty large fish in fast water so it was quite the battle. I'm the guy who sees a fish, any fish, and wants to catch it. Doesn't matter to me what it is I like catching fish. Gar are actually easier to hook on a small fly. The smaller fly gets in the mouth and hangs on some of the loose soft skin. Usually it's a short battle but sometimes you get them to the boat. Haven't tried the rope fly yet.

The biodiversity in these urban areas is exceptional and some sections have cold springs bubbling up through the bedrock that help the fish get through the hottest parts of the summer. Exploring these close places is a great way to see nature and catch some fish. The only down side is that during warm weather the bacteria count jumps up and can be unsafe to wade.
