Trigger Fish
« on: November 06, 2011, 11:19:39 AM »

I had the opportunity to go on another "long range" trip in the GOM a couple of weeks ago and one fo the species we targeted was trigger fish as some of the other more experienced guys on the trip assured us that they are great eating. I'd caught some smaller ones in the past but I had no idea a) how large they get and b) just how delicious they really are -we skillet fried some in panko breading last night and they were great! I thought that maybe some of the rest of you guys might not know about this either and since they're often available in many places closer to shore you might like to know about this too.  Just fwiw we also grilled some of the grouper we caught and it was great too!  :D Every time I go on one of this multi-day trips when I get back to shore I think that I've had all I want and then by a couple of weeks later I'm thinking maybe not.  ;D

Here's some of the trigger fish we caught in the tote bin as they were being cleaned for us.

Just fwiw we also caught more blackfin tuna than you could possibly count...we literally caught them until I was tired of fooling with them and decided to just drink a beer and watch for a while..man they are tough little guys!

While we were targeting trigger fish we might have accidentally caught some red snapper that were hooked deeply and not going to survive that might have made it to the big green egg on the boat for an afternoon snack about 30 minutes after they might have been caught. All purely hypothetical you understand!  8)

Saw one of the creepiest sea critters I've ever run across on this trip....an eel that was easily 7 feet + long and as big around as my arm.  I know I'm projecting but man it was just evil looking! They kept and cleaned it...supposedly it was delicious but I passed on my share of the meat.

And one more just for the heck of it....

Yes, there were some (12 or so) nice AJ's in the mix BD...if you look at the totes you can see some AJ tails sticking out. We had another fish that I've not eaten before and have heard good things about too...tile fish. Don't have a lot of it but am looking forward to giving it a try.

That looks like a good time. Isn't that the fish everyone likes to eat the jaw meat from?

I don't know about jaw meat but one of the guys' wives was talking about their throats being excellent eating....now that I'm thinking about it though it does seem like maybe there was some talk about getting a piece of meat out of their cheeks?

Nothing like fresh Salty Fish.  Reminds of Home.  I remember my mom would say I want to eat fish sometime this week so when you get off of work, go catch something.  Damn, the good life.

Great report,
