Canon S100 vs. S95 and Olympus XZ1
« on: November 15, 2011, 11:00:43 AM »
For a variety of reasons I've reached the conclusion (as offered here earlier this year) that a "pro-sumer" P&S camera is probably the best option for my next camera. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere (www.dpreview.com in particular) I'm currently leaning towards either the Olympus XZ1, Canon S95 or S100.  The S95 is an established and well known and respected product. The S100 is , apparently, just coming out and though there are some reviews around it hasn't really been exposed to the masses much so who knows how it will fare longer term. As for the Olympus it has some very good reviews and it's specifications on paper certainly put it in good stead relative to the Canon products. I also have had positive experiences with their cameras in the past.

Is anyone here familiar with the Olympus XZ1? How about the S100 - has anyone here handled/used one  yet? Thoughts/comments about the S100 vs. the S95? Any concerns about Canon changing to a "home grown" CMOS sensor from the CCD that is in the S95 and S90?  If I went the Canon route is it worth the wait and extra $ for the S100 vs. the S95? I say all this recognizing that black Friday is just a couple of weeks away and that everything changes in the consumer world around then.

Any insight/comments that might help me sort all this out would be appreciated. Heck, maybe the camera I should be looking at isn't one of these products!

Thanks.

Tim I'm drooling over either an S100 or D10 for a pocket camera. I've seen some side by side high ISO images of the 100 vs teh 95 and the 100 is much cleaner. That plus the F2 aperture, CMOS sensor, Compact size, the configurable Ring on lens (a HUGE plus if you understand how to use it) make the S100 my #1 choice.

One of these followed me home the other day....haven't had a chance to use it much yet but so far I am very impressed. This sure is a lot of camera in a small package.

Good point Grumps!

The S100 is what followed me home.

I know that I am a bit of a nave on photography matters but the accuracy of the colors in photos I've taken with this camera is unlike any I've owned before....in a good way of course.  :D  It also, so far, seems to produce better results in dim light than what I've been able to achieve in the past.  Then there's the native video capabilities...it shoots better video than either of the video cameras that we have....again particularly so in lower light conditions. Then the icing on the cake is that it's all in such a small, easy to handle and operate package.  Heck I can palm the dang thing and operate it with one hand if need be.  I look forward to really learning the ins/outs of operation and getting the opportunity to really use it....in fact I plan to later today with the grand kids for starters.  Oh and one more thing...maybe this isn't unique to this camera and it's more specific to my limited frame of reference but I've never seen a digital camera start and be ready to fire as quickly as this one is either.

When I saw that the camera has a GPS function I was curious as to why someone would want that. Can you elaborate as to what application you have in mind in that regard Yoda?

A heads up for anyone that isn't aware though... just like with pictures from many smart phones now remember that the GPS data will usually be included in the image meta-data so if you then post those images without removing the meta data first you will  be providing the lat/lon coordinates for your locations to anyone that downloads the image and knows to look for the data.

Bingo!! As long as you are smart about it, it would be a good way to track your fishing.
