I spend a good bit of time fishing in very cold weather. There is not much you can do to keep ice off your guides in temps below about 30. I've broken a couple of rod tips picking the ice off by hand, so i try to avoid chipping off ice on the top section.
The best tip i have is to work a shorter amount of line than you normally would. Try to 'high stick' for a dead drift instead of stripping line back in though the guides. Most of the ice comes from stripping line through the guides and getting them wet.

I feel like I live in the black hole of Tennessee hunting/fishing. Pretty good drive to get to anywhere worth going...

Hmmm...  I'd have to disagree with you there on the fishing aspect, unless you are only targeting trout...  :(

You are probably right. Lots of good fishing around. I just need to find the time to put forth the effort to find it. And no, I'd rather catch smallmouth than anything. I just post a lot about trout fishing because I'd love to hook into a nice brown sometime as we did not have fish like that back home. But other than the trophy trout quest, smallmouth is my favorite...

Thanks Travis, both posts contain very good points. I will see what I can do about both of them.

Thanks for the tip Adam, that makes sense.

Looks like warmer weather for Friday. Might not have to worry about it much if I decide to go...

Do you live in Williamson Country?  We should connect some time for a little day trip or something...

Yes, I do. I love off of 96 west, west of Franklin. Near the williamson county rec soccer fields.

I'd def like to get together and fish sometime. Let me know when you want to go. I'd need about 3 days heads up to arrange for someone to watch the kids but other than that I am free most weekends and about any evening during the week.

Thanks!
