Intermediate lines
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:31:40 PM »
Granted I have been Musky fishing ONCE, we did better than good for a couple of green horns, a nice fish to the boat and a few follows. We were fishing RIO Outbound Short floating lines, water was running around 900 cfs. A full sinker would have been over kill in most of the water depths we encountered but I'm thinking a 2-3 IPS line would be worth adding to the boat bag.

Opinions ?

Depends on the flies....my triple articulated rooster sized flies need a sinktip line to drag them down to the sweet spot...about 5-8 feet.  I prefer SA Wet tip Express and Streamer Express--I've had some issues with the coatings on the Sharkskin and Mastery Textured Series, but the Classic is fine.
400 gr on the 10 wt, and 450 gr on the 12 wt.
My favorite all time line intermediate is the Tarpon Line....The stuff is bullet proof, and will  turn a Striper around with authority.  It's thicker than most lines and easier to handle when battling a big fish.

intermediates are nice in low, clear summer water... but this time of year you want something that drops and pulls a big chunk of hair and feathers with it.

Travis, I was just cussing my tarpon line the other day, came home, took it off the spool and might put it back on next time I head for salt or about July, whichever comes first. Too dang wiry when cold...

I always have a 350 sink, floater, and Intermediate on a reel in my boat bag. Water and weather conditions and fish behavior change so frequently that I want to be prepared for anything.

Rio Outbound short and SA Streamer Express are both excellent lines.

The line dictates where the lure is Padawan. How many lures do you carry? Much to learn, you still have.  :D
