Brrrr it was chilly.
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:04:30 AM »
Fished most of the day Sunday and man it was cold! All morning we dealt with line and guides freezing. There were a few times I wondered what we were even doing there. That thought was interrupted when Jarrod hauled a nice 40" fish over the rails. As the day progressed the temps got above freezing and line management got much easier. I had a nice fish that shot up out of nowhere in an absolute explosion of speed and appeared to have completely inhaled the fly. I Strip set hard but there was nothing there. Not sure what happened on that one. We had the usual big fish trail the fly to the boat and not eat several times.  Had one that I thought for sure was going to commit but I had to stop working it to run the trolling motor and keep from sinking the boat.

I've sure been enjoying these places but I'm worried of what's in store for them the next few years....A friend said it best when I was talking to him the other day. Its as good now as it ever will be.

I'm telling you, there are times when there is no substitute for a foot-control trolling motor!  I have one of the key-fob remotes now, but occasionally I do miss being able to make minor course adjustments without taking my hand off the flyline in mid-retrieve.

Wouldn't have mattered. When you have a 40" Muskie following a fly within inches of the trolling motor and you turn on the motor,,, its over.

Anyway, I was wondering how you guys did.  Sounds a lot better than I expected, considering how sunny (and windy) it was.  I ultimately decided to write off the Caney and fish Old Hickory instead.  I found about a bajillion big white bass and a handful of small stripers just before dark - no big stripers though unfortunately.  I kept half a dozen of the best white bass for dinner tonight, so it was a productive trip.

The big female white bass had gigantic egg sacs in their bellies already.  I think the spawn is coming early this year.  The redneck in me wants to buy a pound of minnows and go back next weekend to fill the freezer.

I love eating Fried White Bass and I never strip the red meat out either. Since I'm trying to cut Trans fats as much as I can till I'm at my goal weight the White Bass are safe this year. I might have one or two meals of them but that's it.

You know you can cut out nearly all of the trans fats by frying in peanut oil right?  It's more expensive than normal shortening but I think it improves the flavor of fried fish anyway.

The only difference between you and me is that I do trim the red meat off the filets - but you're right that fried white bass is tough to beat.  I'd rather have them than crappie or sauger.  I think the only freshwater fish I like more is bluegill.

Glad you and Jarrod got out Mike...it takes some cajones (smaller cold ones) to fish the wind and subfreeze temps, bit looks like you got to nice fish and secluded water. If the rains don't flood things up, this weekend should be prime.

I saw bd out there. I was in my kayak, got there around 7 am and left at 4 pm. I should've stayed, but playing the shad game wore me out. I might try to sneak out there during the week, especially if the big whites are around. I looooove catching them on light spinning and fly gear.
