Mike, another Minn Kota question
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:06:57 PM »
On my trolling motor the when I turn the blade by hand it feels like the bearings are shot (gritty and stiff). I ordered a new brush kit from Northland but have not installed it yet. Should this cover most/all of my items that I need to replace and lastly, is the installation straightforward?

TIA
Steve

If there is grit in there that sounds bad. Don't know how that could happen no more then you use it. Good news its that it's an easy fix. Those motors are really simple to work on. Two bolts and it comes apart. Getting the armature back between the brushes is even easy. One thing you want to do before you take it apart is mark the big center piece, the main part of the lower unit, with an UP mark on top of the housing. That way you can be sure you put it back with the proper north south orientation. It's easy to get it put back together wrong. If you do this it will reverse the polarity and the motor will run backwards.

I can help if you need me to.

Appreciate the quick response Mike. It has been run its fair share of hours, just not the volume of yours.  :)

I will head down and check the config shortly and see how the housing comes apart. I thought everything comes out after you remove the prop, although I could be wrong. I will take note on orientation as well and I appreciate the offer on the help.

I believe the seal has failed and the bearing is not good anymore. Feels more like a bearing issue (from my cycling mechanic experience) than anything else.

I see what you are talking about now. I just went down and pulled the prop off and see the two bolts you are referring to. I just need to mark the housing. I ran it and it and the bearing seems a little stiff but nothing like it did a few days ago. Could be me, could be the bearing. I still think I should replace so that it is smooth.

I may take you up on the offer with the repair
