Rio Outbound T-14 Custom
« on: April 11, 2012, 09:50:42 AM »
A while back I picked up a Rio Outbound T-14 Custom (6-20439), and have been fishing it pretty hard for a couple of weeks now. I thought I'd add a quick review.

Without modification (at the full 35' head length, 490 gr) it loads a 10wt TiCr very nicely (a wee bit heavy for a BVK 10, would want to cut it to ~30') and shoots <extremely> well. With a foot of overhang and a solid double haul you'll wind up with backing in your hands. It'll carry a big fly down range with authority, and the running line is thick enough that tangles pick out pretty easy (unless you get smashed by a striper while you're working on the tangle -- a story with an unhappy ending). T14 is denser across it's length than the heads that some other fast-sinking integrated lines use, so it cuts through wind really well. Also, since it's a level and relatively thin head, it doesn't take up a lot of spool space so you've got extra space for backing. The running line is surprisingly sensitive.

My only complaint is that the intermediate running line seems to keep the head from attaining the depth that I could get with a T-14 head/mono running line combo. I can tick bottom in 20-25 pretty quickly, but any deeper than that the resistance of the running line seems to pull the head up. I fished the Watts Bar tailrace Monday and struck out -- bait guys were picking up a few stripers deep in the boils, but I couldn't get deep enough quick enough. In the future I'll keep a spool of mono/T14 around for those occasions.

At any rate, it's a solid line that will fish well from a couple of feet down to at least 25'. I heartily recommend it (so far!).
