Leader size ?
« on: April 13, 2012, 02:36:23 PM »
I have been using a 7ft section of tapered 2x, a tippet ring, then which ever tippet size/length to match what I am fishing. Will this still work on the Caney for being able to fish nymphs, dries and streamers or will the 2x be too heavy spooking fish?

Kinda like fishing which ever fly I want and only changing the tippet size for streamers or lengths for dries but the Caney can be picky especially on low water.

Just 5x or 6x be better?

I tend to use a 9 foot 5x tapered leader with 6x fluoro tippet.

I don't know how well your flies will turn over if you go straight from a 2x butt section down to a 5x or 6x tippet.

Thanks, I went ahead a changed my 5wt over to a 9ft taper 5x and put the tippet ring around 7ft down.

I will put the 2x over on my 6wt setup.

Some folks feel like it saves leader - you can re-tie on new tippet without losing any leader length.

For me that's not a big enough issue to worry about.

I used standard ole knots for years. These are something new I picked a few months ago and thought I'd try.

Its about the same so far.

Most  of the time I just tie a small perfection loop about 6' into a tapered leader and tie tippet to that. It sounds sloppy but I can tie 7 feet of 6 or 7x onto the tapered section that's much larger dia with no problem. The flies get down much faster this way also. I learned this from guiding non casters. Much easier to rig this way.

Do you loop-loop that? I had thought about that but figured it hinder too much.

I was told it would save time as well.  You can be fishing a dropper rig running the dropper off the ring and quickly snip it off, then either add length or just change the other nymph to a dry then return to nymph fishing after dry fish dies without having to rebuild or lose a lot of leader or missing the hatch.

That was the sales pitch at least. LOL.  Could be a gimmick or could work don't really know yet. They are popular over in England.

I do a perfection loop in my leader as well. I then attach the tippet using a perfection loop in it and do a loop to loop connector. Super strong and saves tippet. also it puts to rest the argument that attaching mono to flouro is a weak knot.
