Pike Project
« on: April 03, 2012, 03:38:23 PM »
I am going on a Pike trip this summer.  I have been diligently working on getting my box ready for the trip.  These are the flies I have come up with so far.  What do you think?  Anybody got more suggestions on patterns or colors that I should include?  So far it seems I have used a lot of rabbit, which I have read holds up pretty well against their teeth.  I think I should probably tie more baitfish in synthetic materials too.

In my experience, pike aren't nearly as selective as muskies. As long as it'll push water, have a bit of flash, and have a bit of bulk, you'll have a good time.  Timing is everything for bigger fish. Everything you've tied will work. Where are you going?

They look great. The Bunny tends to get tangled quite a bit but it's still a great material for live action. Keep us posted on the results.

gaspergou - I am going to the Upper Peninsula of MI for 2 weeks in July.  Plan on camping near Marquette and hitting a bunch of lakes out in the NF.

Mike - I was thinking the rabbit tails might get tangled a lot too.  But I was hoping with the weed guards on them it might cut down on this.

I am really hoping to catch some Pike on the fly.  And I'm definitely going to throw for Muskies too.  I keep logging casts ... I will connect soon.

I refer to Musky fishing as "casturbation"

That's what I hear! Now we just need to convince TWRA to rotenone those #@$& muskies and stock pike instead. :)

My project is nearing completion and the countdown for MI will begin.  I did a Pike swap on another board and got 7 more gems to add to this box.  I swapped the Black/Red Barr Bou Face as my addition.  I am so ready to hit the U.P.  I will post a full report this summer.

As for Pike in TN, it would be pretty sweet.  I know that they used to stock them in Melton Hill before the Muskies, but locals complained enough to stop that program.  It would be pretty sweet to have some of them to cast to around here as well.
