Streamer advice
« on: June 06, 2012, 06:45:43 AM »
I have been after a particular trout for the past couple of trips with no success. The trout will come to my streamers(crystal flash bugger, white clouser, white wiggle minnow)immediately pushing a wake and come within an inch of taking, only to swirl and snake around the streamer a couple of times before disappearing back into the depths. I am using fluro tippets in very clear water.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Fast short strips with the traditional streamers and slow twitches and jerks with the wiggle minnow up on top...

hmm, i'd come to a complete stop when it is zoned in fairly close & then jerk it to one side about a foot, if it chases, jerk it back the other way a little, make the fish work for it more.

I just assume from where you typically fish that we are talking about a rainbow??  Tie a more realistic pattern and hide the hook and anything else not natural looking. This is a prime time where I would try a tube fly with a small hook. Also consider a crawfish pattern fished on the bottom or a big stimulator or hopper floated on top.

Early or later in the day, with the lower light, whatever is spooking it now may not apply then.

Sometimes, if I encounter finicky fish that don't want to commit on my streamer, I will put an attractor nymph off the back of it. A larger rainbow warrior or fbpt is a good start. I use like five or six inches of tippet off the bend of my streamer to the nymph.

The fish will often follow the streamer out of territoriality. Then they will see the flashy nymph and often eat that.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will try and head back up that way and catch that rainbow soon.

I was going to give the same advice about the attractor nymph, but I always have the best luck trailing a big (#12-ish) prince nymph.
