Harpeth - June 23
« on: June 25, 2012, 10:13:41 AM »
por·tage...the carrying of boats, goods, etc., overland from one navigable water to another.   Yep, that was me on Saturday.  I put in the Harpeth at Moran Road about 12:30 and planned to float to Highway 100...no dice.  Between fishing and dragging the kayak through the numerous shallow spots, I made it to Sneed Road about 6:00.  Called my wife and told her to pick me up there.  Still, it was fun.  Saw 2 snakes, a deer, a bunch of gar and carp/drum.

Beautiful river...just really low.

Caught a bunch of these guys.

And a bunch of these guys.

But this is what I was looking for.

Caught a little largemouth too.  I'll try it again once we get some rain.

Nice work and very good trip report. I figured the river was really low.

Those long eared sunfish are the prettiest fish in TN.  By chance do you know of the situation at the rope swings on Old Natchez Trace a couple of miles upriver?  I used to launch there often, but earlier in the year there were no trespassing signs everywhere- understandable with all of the trash the kids leave behind.

It is still posted.  The reasons why are probably best not discussed on a public forum, but they were having a lot of problems in that area, so they just decided to post the area in an effort to send the troublemakers somewhere else.

Nice bass.  The river behind my house is tapping 6 cfs which is a new record low, beating 14 cfs as the previous record low.  I have found a few small spotted bass, but the bigger smallies are holding in deeper water further downstream...  Did you see any common carp or were they all buffalo?

I believe most of what I saw were buffalo.

I use to put in at Old Natchez since I live close by in Temple Hills.  You probably heard the same things I did regarding the no trespassing signs.  I spoke with the lady from Franklin Canoe and Kayak and she said she had permission to launch and takeout there.  I'll probably try that float again at some point (from Old Natchez to Moran) but I'll just get my wife to drop me off there (or upstream a bit) and pick me up down river so I don't have to leave a car.

Yeah, I have done a launch/pickup there before with no problem.  I think the signs are there to keep people from congregating.  If you are actively loading/unloading you should snot have a problem.

You definitely need to spend a lot of time targeting the buffalo on the Harpeth, Todd.  That will keep you occupied without you putting a lot of fish on the board.  :)

Done - spent 2 hours casting to 4 stupid buffalo yesterday and I think one of them glanced at my fly one time...  >:(

Yep, as tempting as they are, I rarely cast to those buffalo any more.  They just drive me crazy.

Yea, Buffalo respond best to a big clouser stripped fast and across.  ;D

Finally got one to take this morning.  Had him on for about 20 seconds before he rolled over my tippet and pulled the hook out of his mouth.  The bastard!!!   >:( >:( >:(

Yeah, they respond alright ... they like to take off in all directions and cause a ruckus!

Todd - what did it eat?  Only thing I've ever gotten them to eat was a prince nymph.
