up the creek...
« on: July 17, 2012, 11:05:05 AM »
Would a 5hp tohatsu be the little engine that could? As in: would it be sufficient enough to propel
a 13ft riverhawk with 2 flyfishermen, german shorthaired pointer, 35 qt yeti, during generation?
I know...ad nauseam,  but I still need the info! Thanks!

My first thought is...that's alot of stuff in a 13ft boat...

That being said, i do think a 5hp motor would move you up the river...not real fast, but you will get there.

Alot of guys find a 9.9 2 stroke to be a really nice match for the 13ft Gheenoe which is essentially the same boat.

Ride on...guess the dog will have to stay home. The bote that I'm looking at has a  5hp already
installed.

Dave, I appreciate your insightful comments, but does anyone else have an
opinion on the subject? I've only rowed driftboats, rafts, and never had a boat
with a gas engine. Anybody?  [crickets...the silence is deafening]

I have a 15 ft aluminum square back canoe with a 5 hp and can manage 8-10 mph upstream with two men and gear.

No, it's not enough engine for that rig and that load imo.

Here is more info on why I say no. Under generation in a congested river like Caney you need to have precise control of your boat. By being “under powered” you’re putting yourself at risk of not being able to move fast enough to stay a safe distance from hazardous things like the bridge pillars that actually pull you into them. They have sunk quite a few boats to date. It’s strictly your call and the decision should be based on your level of experience and comfort operating the boat.  For me personally I wouldn’t feel safe enough to do it on a regular basis. Just motoring around Happy, no problem. Actually moving up and down the river, too small.

I'm with Mike, no.  If you haven't been on the Caney under generation in a boat it can be a little scary and nerve-racking.  You wouldn't have as much problem with just one generator but, you don't want to limit yourself to a boat that just has enough power for one generator.  And yes those bridge pillars will suck you in.

5ph is the max rating for a 13' Riverhawk...granted guys run boats overpowered all the time, but running a boat at the max USCG rating isn't running underpowered in my opinion...whether the boat would be overloaded as described (2 adults?, dog, cooler, gear)...I guess it depends how big you guys and the dog are, but you might be pushing it...not calling you fat either, just saying if it were me (200lbs) my older son (100lbs) my dog (90lbs) we are already pushing it and haven't even added in battery, gas, cooler and gear...

Here is a link to the Gheenoe website showing 2 adults in a 13' running with a 5hp:

http://gheenoe.net/thirteenft.html

I'm guessing that all they have in that boat are the 2 people, the motor and just enough gas to film the video clip :)  But still should give you a point of reference as the 13' Gheenoe is essentially the same hull design as the 13' Riverhawk...the Riverhawk hull is actually 20lbs lighter than the Gheenoe variety.

Anyway, hope this helps...not trying to be argumentative, but I still think 5hp and 8-12mph is enough juice to safely navigate the Caney under Generation.  Nothing beats taking the boat for a test drive though...have the seller meet you at the Caney and take it for a spin if at all possible.

Good Luck,
Dave
