GPS iphone App
« on: November 07, 2012, 10:28:59 PM »
I've been playing around with NeoTreck tonight (formally Accu terra). I've only played with it at the house so far but if it does what it says it's a hell of a good GPS addition for your iphone. You can select grids from a map and download detailed topo maps with trails and camp sites. I just downloaded the Park and it looks pretty impressive. It's more of an emergency use tool due to battery use but I sure could have used it last weekend.

I Still think a portable GPS is going to be an inevitable purchase for the places I'm planning going this year. Any recommendations?? I'm not looking for a $500 unit.

This is what I have for a handheld and love it.

Will have to look at the app for a reference app.

My kids and I have started using the 4000 mAh portable rechargeable chargers for the iphones.  I'm not a super heavy user of the GPS app (GPS Kit) so I'm kind of put off by the price of the hand helds, but when I do get off the beaten path, I carry that little charger along to recharge when necessary.

Yes, that is what I'm talking about.  Looks like a pretty good price for 5000 mAh.

The one I have is http://www.energizerpowerpacks.com/us/products/g1-xp4001/

It is a generation back from the most current models.  The kids have a different brand and theirs seems to work as well as mine. I selected mine because that is what they had at Target, but a side benefit, is that the charging tips are interchangeable (package including micro USB and iPhone among a bunch of others), and you can get up to 2 free replacement tips a year.  When they become available, I'll get a new tip for my yet to be delivered iPhone 5.

Well, I've put Neo trek to use several times in the park and it's bad ass. It'll locate and track you quickly with or without cell signal as long as there is a view of the sky. It works deep in the forrest or in the truck. I've downloaded a topo of the entire park that includes trails, rivers/creeks with names. You can download as much topo map as your device disk space will allow. It's nice because you can only take what you need to save disk space.

I think I got the app free because I had it when it was accu terra. I don't know what it costs to buy it but I can tell you I've been extremely impressed with it. It'll really come in handy on any future fishing trips with Neely.  ;D ;D ;D

I'd give this one five stars.
