Elk - 3 May
« on: April 03, 2013, 09:22:26 PM »
Hit Ferris Creek Bridge Area and Van Zandt Bend... lots of tiny 4-6 inch browns with an occasional 8-10 in. fish thrown in to keep the interest up.

No time travel... just wish they would stock some decent fish.  You could stand there all day and catch tiddlers on soft hackles.  Very tenuous takes, helps to be fishing bamboo where you can feel things.  The only difference between the bend and the bridge area was that the bridge fish wanted the fly striped and the bend fish didn't.

The problem with this is that TN is loosing revenue as fewer out of state folks buy licenses due to their poor stocking practices.  The fly fishing club in Huntsville had up to 80% of the folks (approx. 40 licenses) buying out of state licenses at one time.  Now with the increased cost and decreased stocking I only know of about 3-5 people that are willing to cough up the money for licenses.  Additionally, there is a lot of "negative speak", relative to the Elk etc which causes others to be less willing to fish the stream as well.

Sad situation.....

I was keeping an eye open for them and didn't spot a one.  IF there are any left, I would suspect it would have to be in a relatively inaccessible portion of the river.  My humble opinion is that brookies and the Elk probably aren't a good fit.

I fished the lower sections today around Veto and Hwy 127. Way too much water moving and only one 4 pound striper to show for it. I wish TVA would stop with the flow!
