I've been lurking here for a while and appreciate the Elk reports, so I thought I'd contribute.

I fished the Elk from about 1:00 to 4:30 on Saturday afternoon.

I caught two hornyheads on my way to the bend.  I caught 4 rainbows just off the point before you wade into the bend, including a couple of fresh stockers.  4 more from the sandbar in the middle of the bend.  2 around the corner from the bend, and then 2 trout from inside corner of the bend.  Most fish were in the 12 inch range and caught on a size 18 red hotwire prince nymph.  Most fish had some thickness to them.  The 2 on the inside corner of the bend were caught on a san juan worm -- including the only brown (and best fish of the trip) that I would guess at around 15 inches.

Casual conversation with other fisherman indicated that it was pretty slow between the bridge and the bend.

whats going on with the Elk?! this time last year on the Elk the fishing was great! the last time i had a good outing there was in november. from the dam down to the bend and ferris creek section is where i would normally take new flyfishers but now we just go to the Duck...any clue as to whats happened?

BMB:  Take a look at Mike's thread, which has some theories on the slow fishing.

In the grand scheme of things, my day was typical to good for my experience on the Elk.  I haven't been going as frequently as I once did, but I typically fish the area from the dam to just below the bend.  Usually, I get fresh stockers from the bridge to the bend and find some slightly larger fish in the bend area.  I've been skunked plenty of times in the past.

The fish in the bend didn't seem to be feeding on midges as actively as I've seen on some days in the past, but there were still plenty of rises, and my catch rate was about typical to slightly better than average.  To me, the fish I caught seemed thicker than usual.  The brown was the best fish I've caught up there since the Cicadas a couple of years ago.

My day was good enough that I'll be back in the near future.  But, I'm disappointed to learn that things slowed down for Mike past the bend.  I always dream of the 24 inch brown that's waiting for me just downstream if my wife will let me buy that canoe!

will do robert1. as far as my experience from the dam to past the bend...fishing from march till nov. in the past it was that my fishing days would honestly consist of anywhere from 15-25 fish brought to hand and about as many hits/misses! last time i was in march after the first stocking of the season....i caught 2 bows around 6-7". pretty sad b/c i really enjoy the elk.....

I haven't fished the Elk much in the last 2 years, but have spent a fair amount of time over the last 15 on Tims Ford.  I've never seen the level of algae as we seem to have this year.  Lots of long strands suspended just below the water surface.  Bound to have an effect, probably not a positive one, on the tailwaters.
