Elk River Brown
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:59:03 PM »
Hello everyone. I am a new member to the forum. I live in Knoxville, but was born and raised in middle TN very close to the Elk River. I have been fishing the Elk since childhood. My passion is trout fishing and I have always dreamed up catching a monster brown trout. On Friday 4/26/13 that dream was lived to the full extent. I never thought I would catch something like this in the Elk. I fish the Clinch and South Holston more now and just knew the big one would come from there. So glad it was my home river.

Ill give a full report later but first Ill try to get some pics on here.

The Mighty Elk coughs up a good fish from time to time.

Where were you raised ? I was raised in a hollow off Hwy 50 on the way to the dam from Lynchburg.

Thanks guys. I grew up in Vanntown. Close to Elora. Just curious, whats the largest trout you have ever heard of caught out of the Elk?

I seem to remember a 12 pound Brown not that long ago.

Dang a 12lb Brown is huge. We caught several 6-8 inch stockers Friday. A couple of 12 " bows, and a nice 15 inch brown. We caught more stocker browns than ever before. It was a different river than usual. Water was stained and flow was up at 500cfs plus additional runoff from rain the day before. Not much action on top at all and very limited bugs hatching. I fly fish but this guy wasnt caught on a fly rod.

There are some nice browns in the Elk, the shocking crew from TWRA have shown me a lot of pics of them that they've shocked up.
They typically aren't at the walk in areas either :(

It's a good thing they aren't as dependent on insects as the Bows are or the upper river would be void of anything of substance.

News travels fast and I have talked to a TWRA agent the past two days about my fish and my thoughts on improvements to the elk.  We had a good talk about slot limits, larger stocked fish, more enforcement on creel limits, and I expressed my concern on the local run off from the water crest fields. He said almost everyone he has interviewed has agreed on enforcing a slot limit. I told him Im all for it and that it has had success up here in east TN. He said they have shocked some big browns up. I told him they should stock more browns since they are more likely to get to trophy size especially with a slot limit.
