A flushing
« on: April 29, 2013, 10:28:49 PM »
From Southeastern Fly:

The Elk River: TVA is currently releasing 4100 + CFS and tomorrow the release will be 5100 CFS. They are releasing down the spillway, which is quite a sight. The generation release is 0 but don't be fooled 5100 CFS down the spillway is as high as I can remember. On a positive note the banks will get a good cleaning.

1 1/3 times usual generation

anyone remember winter 1988 ?

running the gates wide open with generation, and still within an inch of coming over the gates, couldn't drive from the dam to Lynchburg, had to go around by the state park. As you go towards Lynchburg, at the A-frame/paintball area, the road that peels off to the right and heads towards Lost Creek/Bakertown, water was near the top of the road signs.

There is at least one outfit that has dropped people in the river in inner-tube and inflatable kayaks while the river was up and running fast.  Wonder if anyone has taken the 5,100 cfs ride?

Many, many times. Heck it's a miracle I'm around due to things I did when I was in my youth.

Many, many times. Heck it's a miracle I'm around due to things I did when I was in my youth.

We used to ride the concrete drainage ditches thru Dallas during high water.  It was like our own water park ride.  One day we were shooting a culvert we shot many times where you shoot thru big square openings that lead under the road and you get launched out the other side in the air on a 20 foot drop into the pool below.  We had a blast doing it, but we saw this fella enter thru one of the concrete openings and he never came out the the side.  Turns out there was someone's chain-link fence wadded up in a ball and stuck near the end of the shoot and we didn't see it.  It had been shoved in there by all the high water.  When they carried away his body bag I knew I had done my last run - I had just shot the chute right next to it - which, by the grace of God, was clear...

Wow! The Elk has disappointed me as of late. I wish I lived further north by real rivers.  :'(
