Tampa Guide
« on: May 05, 2013, 01:14:43 PM »
Hey Guys,

I've been a long time lurker here since these days I read about fishing more than I actually fish.  Got to figure out how to reverse that ratio but that's another topic...

I'm headed to Tampa in a couple weeks and unexpectedly I have a free day so I was going to see if I could find a guide.  I know it's short notice but I figured if any of you had first hand knowledge of a good guide in Tampa I'd start there first.  Not picky about species, just want to throw some flys at saltwater fish.

Thanks for any help on this and all the other great info I've gleaned from hanging around here!

-Matt

Rob Hayes out of Englewood is really good in that area.  To drop names he is the guide George W. Bush uses.  That has not affected his price it is still in line with other less capable guides in the area.  I have had several fantastic trips with him for Reds and one tarpon trip.

Bill Jackson's is a great fly shop/dive shop that will point you in the right direction.  Depending when you are going down there you might not need a guide.  Safe to say, in june the snook will be on the beach south of Indian Rocks, more toward the Skyway by Fort Desota (40 minute drive)...pm and I will give you the goods.    They are in less then 3' of water eating glass minnows and they never stop coming.  If you want reds, get a guide I can only find them on the lights and by, I Cant Remember the Name of the Key.

Good Luck it is a beautiful area,
Pal

I can vouch for Matt, he is a great guy and he will treat any tips or info with respect.  Glad to see you posting, Matt - now let's get that Gheenoe oiled up!

Thanks for the endorsement Todd!

Thanks JayA and icthus for the replies.  Snook on the beach sounds like a blast.  I'll try calling a couple guides but if everyone is booked I'll try the DIY option.  That's my usual approach (cause I'm cheap, haha).
