I don't do photos all that often, but my best fishing memory this year was on a local creek fishing for smallmouth late in the day just before sunset. I was working my way upstream through a really nice run when at the top of the run I heard a large fish crush a small pool on the far side of the stream. I looked up to see baitfish jumping out of the water like crazy. I took 6 to 8 steps before I was in position to cast to him, and I laid a nice cast into the pool but got nothing. I repeated the cast 2 more times with no success, so I decided to wait to see if he would return. He did, with a repeat of crushing water and baitfish zooming out of there like mad. Three more casts and nothing. I didn't want to whip the water up casting like mad. This was a trophy fish in the area, and i did not want to scare him off... Hmm… Do I need to match the hatch here? I'm on a heavy crawfish pattern that I like, but this fish is chasing creek minnows. As quickly as I can, I tie on Fred's Bloody Minnow (thanks Mr. Mertz!) and as soon as I am done, here he comes again for round #3. Dinner is not over yet! Another flurry of activity and I lay the Bloody Minnow right on the backside of the pool and begin stripping. Bam! Hardest strike I had all year. He heads up stream, past some timber and then tries to get in behind it. I let him take a little line off the reel as I scamper to the opposite shore and get upstream of him. I'm able to steer him clear of the brush and timber and into some soft water behind it where I can walk across the stream and chase him down. My tape said 19" which is as big a fish I would think this small stream would support. He was a beautiful bronze smallie on the 4wt. - a hell of a fight! I eased him back into the pool and he cruised off near a bluff to take a breather. I headed back to the Jeep and drank a cold beer and ate some cheese and sausage...
Cheers and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. I was glad I was able to meet up with several of you to fish this year. I hope to make it a more common occurrence (as always) in 2014.
