Best Fishing Memory of 2013.
« on: December 18, 2013, 12:39:14 PM »
My best had to be this place. Small fish, Extra Large Surroundings. The image below does absolutely no justice to the depth of this place both physically and spiritually.

2nd best of 2013.

Been another nice year keeping up with this site and learning from everyone here.
Got to fish in a few nice places.
The Smokies.

With my wife and Fred Mertz up on the Highland Rim.

But my favorite fishing this year came from following Grumpy's advice on some local creeks to check out.

Looking forward to another year!

I don't do photos all that often, but my best fishing memory this year was on a local creek fishing for smallmouth late in the day just before sunset.  I was working my way upstream through a really nice run when at the top of the run I heard a large fish crush a small pool on the far side of the stream.  I looked up to see baitfish jumping out of the water like crazy.  I took 6 to 8 steps before I was in position to cast to him, and I laid a nice cast into the pool but got nothing.  I repeated the cast 2 more times with no success, so I decided to wait to see if he would return.  He did, with a repeat of crushing water and baitfish zooming out of there like mad.  Three more casts and nothing.  I didn't want to whip the water up casting like mad.  This was a trophy fish in the area, and i did not want to scare him off...  Hmm…  Do I need to match the hatch here?  I'm on a heavy crawfish pattern that I like, but this fish is chasing creek minnows.  As quickly as I can, I tie on Fred's Bloody Minnow (thanks Mr. Mertz!) and as soon as I am done, here he comes again for round #3.  Dinner is not over yet!  Another flurry of activity and I lay the Bloody Minnow right on the backside of the pool and begin stripping.  Bam!  Hardest strike I had all year.  He heads up stream, past some timber and then tries to get in behind it.  I let him take a little line off the reel as I scamper to the opposite shore and get upstream of him.  I'm able to steer him clear of the brush and timber and into some soft water behind it where I can walk across the stream and chase him down.  My tape said 19" which is as big a fish I would think this small stream would support.  He was a beautiful bronze smallie on the 4wt. - a hell of a fight!  I eased him back into the pool and he cruised off near a bluff to take a breather.  I headed back to the Jeep and drank a cold beer and ate some cheese and sausage...

Cheers and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.  I was glad I was able to meet up with several of you to fish this year.  I hope to make it a more common occurrence (as always) in 2014.

Some of my best memories of fishing this year aren't all related to actually fishing in the sense of getting out on the water and casting to those elusive creatures, but the generosity of members of this board who donated their time, talent and more to help me and my kids get into the sport of fly fishing.  As a result I've been able to catch some firsts and bests this year on fly, been able to witness one of my sons catch his first fish on the fly, fished with and caught fish with a fly that was hand tied by my other son...and most importantly have added some really great memories for the three of us that I know I will never forget.  Here's to the friendships and memories of 2013 and many more in 2014!

First bass on fly - we'll call this the "everyone's gotta start somewhere" shot:

This guy is probably still my biggest on the fly...that I was actually able to get in the boat anyway:

My 11 year old holding the fish we caught using one of his hand tied wine cork poppers:

"Casting practice" with the boys:

Merry Christmas to you all!

Great stuff everyone. I was beginning to wonder of you all had quit fishing.  :o

Merry Christmas and hopefully 2014 will be another great year.

It's impossible to pick one. I fished with quite a few friends this year. I wouldn't trade anything for that...

Merry Christmas to you and everyone else as well.

This year a lot kept me from the water it seemed but right now my new (to me) kayak is in the living room getting setup up ready for next year. I can't wait.

Some musky trips this year have definitely created some highlights in my fishing experiences:

Running the Hog Island up and down unfamiliar river stretches with friends and family , missing some close encounters with some monster fish that will haunt us:

I was introduced to my new obsession, thanks to Mike and Dave---River Paddleboarding.  I can't wait to get my hands on one of these.  I already got two models I hope to have in my garage this upcoming spring.

Catching my 3rd largest muskie on the SUP, then returning a month later.... the same fish appeared and gave my brother a good scare as it approached his fly.

Finally, catching my 2nd largest muskie with my brother.  Hollering out loud like maniacs as we tried to net her in the Crawdad without another soul around.

Now my mind is racing with miles of new water that I'm ready to explore when the flows are right and the weather and work schedules all line up.  I can't wait for the upcoming season.  My ultimate goal: a tarpon on a fly on a SUP.  I got just the place to do it during early summer.

My best fishing memory of this year was taking my son to our family's place on the river. The past 50 years our family has congregated on the shores of the TN River in Perry County and it just makes me happy to think that it has continued with my son.
The more I fish the more I realize it isn t about the fishing.  The older I get the more I realize it is about the moments God has hand crafted just for me.
