What an awesome day today
« on: January 26, 2014, 09:40:40 PM »
Dave and I decided to try some new water today in search of Musky. We drove several hours to the Hot Beaver River. The Hot Beaver was looking good today with good color and good flow. There was this odd smell though??? Despite crazy high winds it was pretty fun. Not that much cussing, no broken equipment, no new scratches on the boat, and nobody got a 600 SP stuck in the Face.  Lots of activity from the fish too. Had a 40 dance boatside for about 5 rounds of the "EAT THAT YOU MOTHER TRUCKER!" song. This Musky slashed hard at the fly each round, somehow never quite getting in it's mouth. These fish remind me of a girl I knew in high school. Had two or three other hits that I just didn't get a hook in. Dave and I both pulled some really large ones to the boat in the usual lazy follow and usual ignore yada yada yada...

I got the lucky fly today and boated two smallish fish. Sure was a great first time out in a while.

It's not that we didn't move some nicer fish... These fish are getting hammered and getting smart in the process. Fly fishing for Musky is hard enough when you don't do it often. Fly fishing to heavily pressured fish is almost not worth it. Almost...

Great color on the fish Mike - like the photos!

Yoda,
It looks like the work with the heavier wire on those articulated flies paid off - nice!

Best,
Jason

Is the Hot Beaver River anywhere near Roaring Cock Falls?

You'd need an ice auger to drill that old Hot Beaver today, boys...

The hot bite is supposed to be to wait for it to ice up, drill a hole, then back off far enough that you're still in casting range and wait for a bit. Them old muskies will come over to see what's up. Then you just drop a big popper in the hole and give it a single pop...

You're welcome.
