My cousin invited me out for a wade and spin trip for smallmouth on a remote stretch of headwater up on the Plateau the other day.
First time fishing with spinning gear in over 20 years..... Spent six hours on the water and we had a blast catching a good number of fish, but no smallie was over 14 inches. Wading was tough and I dunked myself three times in the fast runs even though I was wearing studed felts. Glad I left the camera home on this trip even though the scenery was spectacular.
Mepps gold #00 ultralight and #2 black fury seemed to work better than rooster tails in the shallow runs. Once the sun started to set, the top water bite turned on and a black and gold rapala slowly twitched in the current seams brought the aggresive fish up!
On the way up on HWY 111 saw that the Calfkiller was off color and just at the edge of being unfishable. Spoke to some locals and they told me that water temps there seemed more like May than late July. Next, crossed over the Caney to see it high, clear, and green...... Great Falls is holding ALOT of water and that could be another reason the Corps is spillling so much water at Center Hill.
August should be amazing fishing up there if we don't get too much more rain.
