« on: June 13, 2007, 10:10:11 PM »
A newbie to the site.Just wondering how many out there fish with bamboo rods, old or new? I have a Montague 8.5 foot, that hope to try out this week-end on the Caney. What is the best way to determine the proper line wt on on eof these older rods?

Welcome to the board. I don't fish them but I know a few here that do. Dleo should be along after while and I'll bet he can help you out.

The rod should have some lettering on it ie: HDH, ABC, something to that effect, that determined for the most part the old silk lines of years ago.
Leo can tell ya exactly from the rod, i just grab a few reels with different weight lines & head to the parking lot to try them :-\
Normally with todays lines, a 5 or 6 weight is the norm.

I have an HDH that I fish with a 5wt. DT even though that "officially" corresponds to a 6wt. DT.  It casts great with the 5...

Here a good chart:

Great direction so far, I would be surprised if the Monty had the line designations (HDH or D, HEH, etc.) on there though as that was not a common practice with Montague.  Because it is an 8 1/2 footer (if it was originally made that way) I would start with a 5 wt then go up from there.  My guess is, that because it is a Montague, it is made from "Genuine Tonka" cane and is pretty heavy and will probably throw a 6 wt a lot better than it does the 5.  I would recommend a weight forward, and probably a long belly line like the Triangle Taper Long belly, or the 5 or 6 weight Western Drifter from Cortland on it.
To really find out what it is, you could measure the taper at 5" intervals and go to HexaRod, enter the taper, look at the stress curves and then compare it to archived known rods to help you determine a good starting point.

I figured Leo might describe his bag of pennies method for determining a rod's wt characteristics, but seems like you have it figured pretty well.  I can only tell you, in case this is your first boo stick.. it gets deep in your blood, you'll have dreams about it -- it calls to you from the rod tube, whispers let's go, let's go, the fish are waiting... it hums, it sings, it dances like a slim  amber eyed girl who knows the steps better than you and forgives your mistakes, and when you hook up, depending on the size of the fish,  it jitterbugs, it waltzes, it does a rumba, perhaps a tango, it telegraphs every heartbeat, every  thought the trout is having right through your hands and arms.. a real joy to fish.  After a hook up, it relaxes in your hand a moment -- and wonders how good a cigarette would be right then ---you can almost sense it smiling, maybe even laughing, and sorta lets ya know it's ready to go again anytme you are.    Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
