This worth anything?
« on: September 20, 2016, 04:50:03 PM »
I'm down here in MS helping my Dad clean out a house he's going to flip.  It is a hoarder house.  Just unbelievable.  Chest high in all kinds of junk and not even a path.  8-10 feet high in the living room.  He left the house in 2008, so everything is pre '08.  The guy was a birdwatcher and parrot owner.

So far we're about a foot and a half down and I've found several Canon cameras.  If I'm understanding correctly, the cameras aren't worth anything anymore.  The house has not had power since then as far as we know so everything was affected by temperature.  One of my guys came out about an hour ago with another Canon with a giant lens on it.  I know nothing about photography so was hoping to get some advice from you guys.  It's a Canon FD 200mm 1:1.8.  Also the camera has and extender on there model FD 2x-B.  A little googling shows that the big lens was around $2,000 new.   The body is in good shape but the coating on the lenses appears to be screwy.  Kind of scratched up on the internals around the edges and then on the inside of the biggest lens it has sort of a squiggly spider crack looking thing going on- a spot of about half a centimeter.

Is this thing worth anything?  Should I just chunk it?  Looks just like this one:  http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/fdlenses/200mmf18L.jpg

Thanks for any advice.

-Jon

No the fd mounts aren't very sought after now. They are all manual I believe.  If there is haze or mold on the lens, or cracks, it's worth even less if anything at all. The whole package cameras and lenses might be worth a little depending on the body.

Thanks for your reply, Mike.  It just feels unholy to throw something like this into the trash.  Also, it's great to see you back here on TFTN. This is your front yard and I appreciate your efforts in keeping it alive.  PM...

Yea I wouldn't throw it unless it has mold. No photogrpaher wants a moldy lens anywhere near their good lenses. It spreads.

Good to be back! Thanks, and you're welcome.
