Chasing Puppies

Made a quick turn and burn trip to the NC coast in NewBern/Oriental/Havelock.
What an amazing, unique coastline. EVERYWHERE we explored, we caught fish....except the open water bull red "old drum" fishing.
Here was our explanation fom the local shops:
Salinity is way low in the bay after hurricane 3 weeks ago and recent tropical storm. Bulls were late to show up in August, and have vacated most spots and congregated back near inlets. Tackle shops and guides having trouble getting numbers that hit well weeks ago at first of September.
August is miserably hot...but that seems like the most reliable time to find the big reds and large schools of pogies.
Still had an absolute blast.
Wound up catching plenty of smaller reds, trout, flounder, and occasional small striper.
Great place. Maybe next season on Bulls. My boat can't get into bigger water where they were this trip. Most guides catching them were sinking bait near inlets. I've never fished an estuary with virtually NO tidal current. Fish bite was steady all through hours of day, searching with gear.
I'll definitely be back next August.

Awesome. I love the NC coast. One of my favorite memories as a kid. I hope you at least kept some of the reds and flounder.
Looks like you're enjoying the boat still. It's a sweet boat for sure. Thanks for the report. Hope to see ya soon!

Another great TR for sure. Looks like a good time minus the blown tire.
