For stopping a boat dead in it's track, i haven't seen anything better than a 30 lb pyramid.

I've got a 10 lb NAVY style anchor and has worked well so far.  On my only float down the Caney, my skipper used a 18" piece of heavy log chain to slow us down, just a little more would stop you.

Steve,

did you ever find the perfect anchor? I've ran across these in a couple of stores lately. Wonder if they are overkill? The 14 pounder sounds like what we are after.

David check out these links.  I think the spikes on that you're looking at will hang up on the river bottom too easy resulting in no more nice anchor.  If you want to anchor off with 1 unit flow on the Caney you will need more than 20# to hold your Jon boat.

David,

I ended up with a River Anchor like this and I believe I purchased the fifteen pound model.

I like the link you posted although my only concern would be the anchor hanging up on debris and not being able to pull it up.

I will say that I have been able to keep my boat in place under flow with the 15lber, but that anchor is struggling to do that and if it doesn't get a good grip on the bottom.

I whent out with a guide for catfish back few years ago on the cumberland below cheatham dam at the time had two generators going river was moving out, he was using a Richter anchor and we didn't move. Base don that i picked one up for my 18" bass boat and it really bites the bottom. I have had to motor up river and use the boat the break the anchor free. But I'm very happy with it.

Steve,

I've had the Navy anchor on the other two boats, the one I get is from (Sportsman Warehouse) it has a pin in the bottom for the anchor to pivot, won't pinch your hand or allow the anchor to slide up and down the shank.

But they were out of them yesterday >:(
