Title: Duck River in National Geo
Post by: dbradyh on January 27, 2010, 02:40:27 PM

The Duck River made it into this months Natl. Geographic as being one of the world's biodiversity hotspots.
Great images of some of the aquatic life with emphasis on the many species of freshwater mussels.

I finally got a chance to look at this the other day in a doctor's office waiting room.  Interesting article.

How come only the articles about Africa are allowed to show photos of the locals' boobs though?  :)

While I was at Alabama, I got a request to take a NG photographer out to the Cahaba River to show off some of the fish diversity. Another student and I loaded up a seine and backpack shocker and in about an hour brought him beautiful examples of just about every species in the river, many drop-dead gorgeous in bright spring colors. The river was low and clear and we got crazy cool rare things that occur almost nowhere else... He then spent ALL day lying on a gravel bar setting up a shot, trying to take a photo through a half-submerged glass tank with the river in the background, barking orders for us to move this, hold this reflector just so, etc. He had selected a common, bland-colored and transparent sand darter, and posed it over big coarse cobble in the tank, a habitat the fish would NEVER occur in. Our arguments otherwise were roundly ignored for the sake of his artsy-fartsy shot. He didn't even take us up on the offer to visit the local bbq joint afterward. What a jerk...

Here's the shot...

I figured it out.  I thought I would have this on my shelf, but did not.  I will have to look at the library.

How far the mighty have fallen.... once upon a time the NG was a fine professional journal... now it's about like a comic book, and even the accuracy of the reporting is poor.  My dad had a lifetime subscription starting back in the '40s, and I was hot to grab that package when it came in the mail.  Today, I barely look at the rag... sad.
