Annual Canadian Smallie Fest
« on: August 13, 2015, 11:50:18 PM »
Been a long time since I've posted a TR, but that's because I haven't fished much this year.
Happy to tell you that changed this week.  Frankie had a family commitment, but Scott and I headed for southern Ontario with high hopes.

What we found was extremely low water levels due to less than average rainfall for the region.  This meant two things...the fish were a little easier to find in the deep holes, and we had to drag our 'toons through a lot of really skinny water.

Day one produced some tremendous fish in all the expected places.
The hex were out and flying in force.  If you've never seen these bugs in person, it's hard to believe how big they are.
They come flying upstream raising and lowering they're flight anywhere from 3 feet above the water to 20 feet in the air, looking for a mate.  Very cool to watch.

Day two on another stretch of the same river also produced.
This one was my big fish of the day at just over 20".

On day three we tried a different river which was also was low on water.  It made the series of rapids a little harder to read, but we navigated them without any mishaps.  True to form, this river produced less numbers, but very stout smallies.

Given the skinny water we decided to head back to Michigan for day 4 and fish a river I've nick named The Bridgestone in reference to all the tires and golf balls it contains.
Here's a small sample of what is on the river bed.

We invited another friend to join us and we absolutely whacked 'em.
Mostly on top water and the Bloody Minnow.
Here's one of the many to come to hand.

It's so-o-o-o good to have gotten out and chase one of my favorite species.
Thanks for reading along and may you get the time to do the same, soon.

Fred

Stud smallie! Looks like a fun trip, even without the expected water levels.

I got somebody's drifter sitting over here, we could go out in it, all my fishing friends quit as well, even the new ones at the store.
