Fishing was slow
« on: October 13, 2013, 02:27:37 PM »
Walked in at metcalf and fished the area below the bridge.  On the way in I passed a steaming pipe of bear scat on the road. It literally was still warm.  Caught a few bows and a small brown.  On the way down I passed another pile of bear scat. Had no idea there were so many bears in the usually  crowded area. Made my way down river to an island that I'll call hornet island. I've never seen so many yellow jackets and hornets in one area I'm my life. They were all congregating at the rivers edge.   I had wondered into the middle of it before I realized what was going on. As I turned to go back they were all over the ground. I was being careful not to disturb them but that was impossible.  I heard one buzzing my head and I broke into a run. Scary place.  Walked back to the truck and found my way to smokey joes bar b que for some smoked chicken and fried pickles.   Headed home next

Anyone ever seen hornets and yellow jackets congregate in an area like that? I have no idea what made the back of that island so interesting to them but clearly there was something there.

Maybe some sap dripping from trees?  A coworkers car must have had 50-100 yellow jackets on it last week, we realized they were eating the sap off of it.

This is the larger ones that look like a Yellow Jacket but much larger. If size and resemblance to Yellow jackets have anything to do with sting power theses guys are deadly! They were EVERYWHERE.

Painted shiner? What ever they were they were at least playing the game unlike the trout.

This pile was full of acorns.

This pile was full of persimmon seeds.

A tiny wild Brown. I was searching for the big boys but the wall of hornets prevented me from going further.

You won't see this on a warm sunday very often...

I don't know what that giant hornet thing is, but one has been terrorizing my sitting spot for the past two weeks.  Hovers perfectly in one spot and stares at me (loudly buzzing like a little chopper- at least you know when he's around) .  It loves the silicone suction cup on the window mounted temp guage and for some reason one spot on the brick steps.   I've started getting brave with shooing it off, then spraying it with outdoor bleach from a sprayer and the water hose nozzle on jet mode- all to no effect.  I tried stepping on the thing when he was lit on the bricks, but he's too fast for me.  It doesn't seem to be all that malicious, but damn it does look like death.

I fished the WPP today. I had the wife and kids with me. So didnt have much time to fish. Put 6 to hand (all rainbows ) in less them a hour or so. Great time to be out in the mountain.

Indeed it was. I was close to the road all day and I heard every leave that fell.  ;D

I imagine the animals are wondering where all the "pesty" people are, they can finally wonder around w/o being bothered or they're wondering where the free handout's are :o.
Headed to the hills Thursday, gotta make sure i have the battery charged, nothing available there.

I have no idea on the hornets. The nest that was behind my house got rooted out by an animal.

That bear scat will make you leery.

Stop playin' with bear shit and catch some darn fish, already..... ;D

Gets mighty tough to fish small cricks when the leaves fall and the water's clear and low. Sure is a beautiful time to be out though. Missin' those Kentucky trips now.
