a years worth of waiting
« on: September 10, 2013, 07:45:33 PM »
Last year a Pal and I had plane tickets, reservations, and gear ready to go out and hit the black canyon for the famous salmon fly hatch.  The stars did not or might have lined up to well and I was blessed with my son so we did not make the trip.  For my birthday this year my wife asked me what I had in mind...What????? Well a 3 day weekend fishing trip east of Memphis.  She agreed and this is how it went.

After 4 hours of sleep we were off--
where we slept

The first .5 mile, sweat test.  We traveled 2,700 feet in 1.9 miles---moderate to a pain in the can.

pictures can be deceiving

Half way there

And we have arrived

Looking up from camp
"You see the fish, make the cast. Tic, tic, hit him, no not a trout set!!!!!! What are you doing?"

Looking down from camp

after setting up camp and letting the legs rest for a bit we were off to the water---

Stealth at times was the key

after switching the fly once---never changed again the rest of the day---

not a lot of these, but they were a good surprise

and more of these

a great run that produce 8 or 10 fish

my fly wouldn't float due to the fish drowning it every 8 or 10 cast.

a lot of rock hoping--there was no room out of the river to move around

another great run, but very little room to cast

He wanted to come to dinner, but we had something a little more filling.

woke up to this fella crawling around---pretty awesome bug

Day Two Started Off Great

amazing spot

I have never seen beauty like that...

oh yeah it held trout

God's refrigerator---   :D

All in all a great trip.  To add to the excitement, we had a bear walk through camp Sat. night.  We had all of our food hanging, but still it did not detour his curiosity.  Talk about having your head on a swivel for about 8 minutes.  Then the days fishing took over and back to sleep.

The weather was awesome, fishing was out of this world, hiking with a PAL, no cell phones, and most importantly being able to see the beauty of God's imagination.

Hope you enjoy

Pal

Lots of folks make fun of them little fish. I was one of them once. I'm so happy they don't get it and hopefully never will.
There is not much collective security in a flock of sheep on the way to the butcher.

Those are the people who think fishing is about catching fish.

My sentiments exactly.

Damn fine reportage there! Thanks for that.

Nice report and pics...awesome trip!  Looks like the Oskar Blues stocking program the TWRA started a few years ago is paying off too, those are some HEALTHY Dales Pale Ales swimming in that stream!
