Spent another weekend in the Park.
« on: August 11, 2013, 10:02:35 PM »
Dave and I covered some serious miles and about 1000' ft of elevation change from where we entered the river. Don't know how many we caught but we caught fish after fish in all the suspect places.

I wasn't comfortable taking my DSLR on this one so I took a Nikon J1. It does much better then my waterproof camera but I had to be pretty cautious not to dunk it...

Zip screws in felt bottoms = Billy Goat Boots! I was amazed at how well this actually worked. ONLY way to go in this kind of geology. My scabs and bruises from last weekend (with just felt) have almost healed and I'm glad to report no new injuries.

This shot does this falls no justice. It's tall, steep, and not alot of foot/hand holds.

I know these are tiny Trout but when your in this kind of place who cares. Besides these are the "trophies" of this stream. :)

Another pretty sizable falls. We had to find a trail to bypass this one. No way over without climbing gear. At least not for me...

Another falls with a plunge pool that provided many of these.

The river changes up high and flattens out for a little stretch (relatively speaking). Thunder rumbling in the background is the only reason we didn't fish this out till near dark.

Another amazing trip. Once we left the main trail we never saw or heard another human. Perfect!!

Great shots and beautiful brookies guys.

I haven't ever fished up in the elevation in the Park. How do you make a quick exit once a storm pops up or does it resemble an episode of Wipe Out on the way back down?

There is no quick exit from this place. If the crap hit the fan your best bet (IMO), if you don't have to cross on foot (no bridges on the trial) would be to find a rockhouse and hunker down. Falling Hemlocks were our main concern  :o, lightning on high ridge lines would be secondary.  If you have to cross on foot you'd just have to do double time getting down.  There is a trial near by on this one. It's not always reachable but you can usually hike up to a place where it is.
Descending is where most injuries occur and running down this trail,, wet, would be inviting a broken bone. I twisted my ankle a little just walking fast down it.

Did anoyone notice the Anaconda in the right side of this image. From the color it seems it may have mated with a Copperhead to make a Anacopper. I bet it's fangs are like 10" long. Place is full of em.

Nice shots!  We were in the park a few weeks ago...I was only able to fish for a very short time due to other family commitments on this trip, but the serenity of that environment is like no other I have ever fished.  Would love to make a trip back there with some serious time carved out for fishing.

Thanks for sharing,
Dave

Mike,

I'm curious as to specifically what kind of screws you used.  I tried the same thing (zip screws in felt) the last time I was up there and ended up taking them out as it was worse than felt alone.

I don't remember exactly what I used but they were just too hard.  Oh and nice TR!

Thanks,

-Jonathan

I didn't take a thermo but I'd say mid 60's maybe?? I'm not great t guessing temps. The air temp dif between the lower park and this place seems to be 8 to 10 degrees. That sure helps make it tolerable. Several times at the falls I got chilled and had to get up and move around to warm up.

I'm curious about this as well. I've only ever used just felt, so I am all about a method that keeps me upright more often.

See above.
I'm sure the Simms studs work even better but for the price these worked just fine. It's impressive how much better they hold. Felt often seems like its going to hold,, them all of a sudden you're on your butt,,, these will only slip in the most slippery stuff but even then they don't just give way all at once. It's a gradual sort of slip that you can usually recover from. Dave makes his living on the water and he swears by them. That should tell you something.

Hey Mike,

My question on the studs was which ones you used that worked so well.  I used something that looked exactly like what you posted, that I got in bulk from a liquidation sale from a hotel operator that was going out of business.  Super convenient to put into the felt as you just use the standard hex bit holder to drive them in.  Whatever metal composition on the ones I used was just not the right kind that will grab hold of the snot covered granite in the park.  Mine look like SS, and were finished to a higher standard than your regular fastener, so I suspect that was the problem.  Two super hard surfaces and neither one would give to bite.   Leaving out on the trip I was all proud of myself for buying 20lbs of expensive screws for $2.

I think the ones that are commercially sold as studs are made of a softer material so that once through the snot, the rock takes hold of the stud.  After I posted the question found some aluminum head zip screws that would probably be perfect.
