Was trying to think of what I would do in that situation.  Nothing good has come to me yet.  If you run and the cubs want to play, you're screwed.  If you stand up tall and make as big of a presence as I've always heard, you're probably a threat to the cubs and hence, screwed.  Maybe walk off the trail backwards uphill?  Take your pack off and drop it so the cubs would be curious about that?  Take your by now soiled drawers off real quick and run like hell backwards?  No idea.  That's one lucky dude.  Anything could have set Mama off.

He did the best and only thing he could do. Filming imo was a bit risky.

Very true Mike, if he would have taken off on a trot or full run, he would have likely been toast.

I remember when I had a Black Bear sneak up on me one when I was playing a Coyote call. I’d prepared for this in my mind over and over because I knew that as much time as I was spending in the smokies off trail I was bound to run into one at some point. I was not expecting one to sneak up on me, especially one that size.  I had in my mind a Bear a little larger than a big dog. My first all alone encounter would be with one that was more like  a short cow in size lol. I always wondered if I would have the courage to not run. I’ll say this. Running never crossed my mind. I faced the bear and slowly walked backwards until I could no longer see it. At some point I was positive he wasn’t following and couldn’t see me, so I put some space between us,, by running.
