Obey fished ok this weekend. We had one fish that went 19" and that one was alot bigger than the rest that we caught. There were quite a few boats running up and down the river and the waves and mud banks made the river very stained. We managed to find a secluded place where the boats couldn't get to and we started whacking some dinks. On a 3wt it was a good time. They were eating black or olive midges in about a 22, and Black winged ants in about a 20.

Sounds like a nice trip Mike, that is one of my favorite cold rivers. Take different thinking to fish but its full of fish. You find any of those big brooks up there? They are growing better in there than the Caney. About 2 1/2 years ago, I watched one in a current break next to about a nice brown and that brook trout was every bit of the state record. It was early Nov and both were colored up good.


Did you happen to notice if they finished the work on Hatchery Creek banks?  I was wanting to take my 3yr old up for her first trout on fly then trip to see the hatchery fish.

We caught plenty of Brook but no large ones. The river wasn't on top of it's game compared to past trips there before all the HEAVY generation. Part of it I'm sure was that we were confined to a section of river where I don't normally fish. Part of of it was heavy boat traffic over already spooky fish.

I didn't see the banks of the creek so I can't say if the work is done there or not. I can't imagine though that you couldn't find a place to take her on the Obey somewhere. The fish in the pressured spots were picky and EASILY put down by a fly line. I wouldn't recommend taking her there. Shoot me a PM if you go and I'll share where we were fishing. She would have a ball where we were.

 

We also saw lots and lots of didymo so just know it's there and take precautions with your gear when moving from one body of water to another.

Unfortunately it has been there for at least 3 years. It is only matter of time before it ends up being carried down 56 to the other tailwater. IF not already.

We haven't decided completely yet. If we do I might shoot you a PM or go to Happy. People this weekend kept complaining of no fish biting yet they walked right over the tops of them to fish with their backs to them. She could easily catch those with help too.
