A letter from the GSMNP association
« on: October 15, 2013, 08:17:53 PM »
Dear MIKE,

We'd like nothing more than to retire this photo forever and erect a new sign that says: "Welcome Back to the Smokies!" According to an announcement from Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam's office this evening, that's exactly what we're going to do.

**The Smokies will reopen to visitors tomorrow!

For the most immediate, up-to-date information, check our website, our Calendar of Events and our Facebook page often in the coming hours.

When the national park reopens, lots of things will happen at once:

- Visitation will immediately surge to near-normal October numbers

- The fall color season in the Smokies will have plenty left to show

- Cades Cove, Cataloochee, Deep Creek and all the beloved areas of the park will once again be accessible by the public
- The holiday shopping season will kickoff in all 7 of our official park stores
- GSMA board member Danny Bernstein will be one of the first to lead a group hike
- "An Island in the Sky" premiere preparations for Saturday, Oct. 19, will resume

Who needs the Feds!  Power to the PEOPLE.  Really, the folks in Washington ALL need to GO.

So the Feds were able to extort $60,100 per day from the States, to allow the public to access  public lands?

Yes, we had to wire money to the Federal government to reopen a park. I say leave it closed before paying the extortion.

More importantly common working people who needed to be paid are getting paid and an area that depends on this month to survive is back in operation.  I've seen much worse spending in Gov. I'm just guessing here but surely this will be refunded to the state once this is settled. They usually strike a deal to give back pay to the furloughed workers when this happens.

So, do we get our money back now that a deal has been struck? Likely not.

Mike, are you sure that money would be used for pay?

That's what prevented the park from opening. The non essential employees were on furlough. We can argue that most of them are non essential everyday,, but I bet after a few months of these places getting trashed by hooligans we would change our minds. I'm all for smaller gov. I'm also all for protecting these sacred places for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.

Oh, I agree about protecting them as well.

Smaller government, yes, yes and yes.
