Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks- good for foot breathers.
« on: January 30, 2019, 10:30:29 PM »
It's good to see all of the fresh discussion on here.

Not directly a fishing product, per-se, but didn't know where to stick it.  These socks are awesome!

My feet and hands have always been kinda breathy.  In the 90's I remember wearing those Nike sandals and could literally work up a lather just walking between classes.  Leather watch band- forget it.  Conference room table- I have to keep my hands sideways on a pad or something or I'll fog up a square foot.  Performance outdoor jackets just make my wrists freeze.  Even with a silk liner sock, when deer hunting I have to take my boots off and change socks or I'll be lathering them up walking out all oily-toed.

I've tried all kinds of expensive socks and none of them work for me.  I kept seeing ads for Darn Tough and decided to give them a try.  At over $20/pair they are not cheap, but man, these things have been life changing for a foot breather like me.  I wear Merrell Ventilators for knocking around shoes and they finally breathe.  I've since ordered 4 more pair and kinda forgot what it was like to wear regular socks again.  They're all in the wash and now I'm sitting here with cold feet wearing some kind of gold toe spandex/cotton socks and it would only make it worse to wear a heavier weight synthetic over top of them.

Darn Tough's are made in Vermont and come with a lifetime warranty FOR A PAIR OF SOCKS and while I don't see myself shipping old socks off in the mail, it's good to know that I could.  Model 1466 Crew Cushion Hikers.  Good stuff.

They are good socks, fit a little tight for my liking in the calve area. I wear them & Smartwool, which isn't as tight around the calves. PRICEY, yes, the years I get out of a pair are worth it though.

I prefer the flip flop over wearing wool these days. You boys can keep that cold weather. 53 for the high today.  Brrrrr

Sweet I'll try them. I've been buying SmartWool. I’ve rediscovered wool the last few years also. I love some thick wool socks with my Muck Boots. I search ebay for wool shirts too. I don’t like paying the steep retail price for them. They are amazing for staying warm when paired with some of the new thinner technology outerwear.

Smartwool are made here in town.  You can go pick through the 2nd bin to match your own for $3 per pair. Unless I am hiking, where all socks get wet, then wool is much too warm for me.  But my feet are either sweating or they are cold, no in-between.  Wool doesn't get clammy though.

The cheaper ones seem to have good reviews.  They are a different composition and higher in wool % than the Darn Toughs, which kinda makes me think they would "pill up" faster than DT's.  They show a pic of a guy pulling the calf down which shows a fuzzy heavier weight looking material on the inside.  DT calves are the same on the inside as outside which leads me to believe that along with the higher wool count that they might be warmer up top than the DT's.  I'm wearing the 1466's in Lime right now (they are not lime, btw- they're different shades of gray as far as I can tell).  I'm counting 11 different "panels" of different weaves and types of material all over.  They truly do not bunch up or sag or anything anywhere.  They always look like they do on the mannequin or model foot or whatever.  The People Socks show a diagram with 4 different panels.  They also don't mention any kind of warranty like the lifetime no questions asked deal with DT.  Grumpy mentioned tight on the calf and I can see that as they are snug, but not tight on me.  I'm 5'9, 185,size 11 and the Large 1466's fit perfect on me but I'm sure if you need a slightly larger calf version, DT probably has something designed to fit.

I've since bought 3 more pair for my Mother in all girly designs and they seem like a lighter weight version of mine.  She said something about Bombas- I figured this was some BS she saw on Facebook or something, but they also look like a good brand.  Bombas has a similar warranty to DT, and claims to have donated 10 million pairs of socks to homeless shelters FWIW.

One thing I just learned from reading comments on the PS is that you should wash them inside out.  Will do this with the DT's from now on.  People also claim that you can wear them several days and I actually tried this out and yessir you can.  Called it at 6 days of one pair of socks but showering mostly each day and they truly weren't funky.

It seems like DT has figured out their sock game.  Should be for $22/pair.  Maybe buy a 4 pack of the People Socks and one pair of DT's and let us know how you like them.  At this point I've already bought into the DT brand and like them enough that I'm just going to stick with these and then maybe try out their warranty in a few years.

Cost of them is no factor at all since they literally will outlast cheap socks 10-1

I ran the reviews through fake spot and it gave the company an A grade. Impressive for 4000+ reviews. I'll try them out.
