Obey Launch
« on: May 10, 2009, 07:00:34 AM »
I'm going to fish the Obey for the first time next week.
I usually fish the Cumberland but looks like it'll be it could be a month before it's fishable again.

Where's the best place to launch a jet on the Obey tailwater ?

From what I've read Zebra Midges are the go to fly on the Obey. How about Stone Flies this time of year ?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

You might look at the generation schedule, with the water off, the Cumberland will be backed up to the dam, any ramp will work on those conditions.

Your only option might be launching at Donaldson park. Last time water was up this high with rain/generation Moody's was closed due to water being in the parking lot. The Dam could be an option but a tricky one if both fishing piers on each side of the ramp are under water, then you will have to account for those with high flow. Also, even with 2 generators running sometimes you make the turn below Moody's "Peterman Bend" the water could be very slow if not still because of the back up. The only thing that could save the current flow would be the amount of water pulled from Cordell right now. It might be enought to keep the back up to a minimum

Those flies are great during low or possibly one generator but if the water is up high plan on just catching skip jack. I have fished it several times this year under these type flows.

Don't put in at the ramp close to the campground if they are releasing water from DH! The pier a few yards downstream would destroy a boat if your loading didn't go just right and you floated into it. IMO the Obey under generation is not a fun place to be in a boat.

Thanks for the advice.

The Flowsheet shows 2 generators running Wed and Thurs. I think we'll try launching at Donaldson Park , run up to the dam and start fishing back down. Hopefully there'll be enough current to drift nymphs. If not, we'll fish streamers or get out the spinning gear and toss Rapalas, little Cleos, and spinners.

Again, thanks for your help.

With 2 or more there will be plenty of current. BE CAREFUL UP THERE!

With the amount of water they are running right now, I think I would postpone this trip for a few weeks.

Yea BD, I would too. But again if you do come the Obey is a narrow river and high flows are deadly there. Lots of nasties on the bank that will swallow a small boat. Go above the dam and fish, you'll love Dale Hollow Lake, I promise. Might even holler at fishfindergeneral on this board, he's fished that lake alot and could help you find something to get into.

Not to jump in and beat a dead-horse....

But, I can weigh in on high flows on the Obey and it has potential to be deadly right now. The lake on the other hand could be very good, if you are coming down this way anyway.

We'll take a look at the river this afternoon  before we pick up the boat from storage at Traces.
The boat is a 17' Grizz with a 90/65 Merc.
Main reason for the trip is to bring the boat back to Georgia where the Hooch is fishable. Not wanting to waste the long drive ,
we thought we'd try the Obey since the Cumberland and the Caney are out of the question and we've never been on the Obey.
