Title: ferrel leaders
Post by: jarrod white on December 30, 2007, 03:32:03 PM
just wanted to get a few opinions on fishing with a ferrel leader. I have tried them but wondered what type of effect they have on the fish,  if anybody has any knowledge, I would like to hear it.   thanks

Are they similar to a feral hog?  ;)

I believe you are referring to furled leaders? If so, I have never seen a negative impact using these and the fish being deterred. I believe they give a lighter presentation of the fly especially when fishing dries.

I will say, the only negative I see if the retention of water between the strands and maybe a little more noise coming off the water.

Generally, on the Caney, I fish flouro or mono depending on what I have on me. I tend to keep the furled around and use it with flouro tippet in the mountains on wary fish.

I have one of those that was given to me by a man at the Federation of FlyFishers conclave in Mountain Home Ark. a few years ago. I just found it recently in my tying box , and was thinking of trying it, I have tried some others that I did not like maybe this one is better. I think the concept is great if the fish dont mind it , I love it.
