Title: Barbless Hooks Thank Goodness
Post by: wm1 on November 19, 2009, 08:34:44 PM
I 'always' use barbless hooks.
Today I was especially glad.
While fishing  two flies, an 11" rainbow slipped out of my hand with the hook still in his lip and my trailing soft hackle snagged my little finger with the full weight of the fish burying the full bend of the hook in my finger. OUCH!
Released the fish, grabbed my hemostats and easily slipped the hook right out of my finger. Lots of blood, but I went right on fishing.
If you are not using barbless for the fish's sake, think about what happens if you hook yourself or someone else.

Not for me. I only use them when clients can't cast.

Shoot, I don't even use them then. Some sports need all the help they can get so I try to teach "safe" casting first and then wear a wide brimmed hat!  8)

Oh yea, and one of the best early lessons in fly fishing (or any fishing for that matter) is the "heavy line yank" hook removal technique. But it would have been no help to WM1 with the use of only one hand.

I feel pretty confident performing this technique just about anywhere but the eyes, which is why folks must always wear eye protection while fishing.

Rocky, that trick has proved priceless the times i've had to use it. A few times a year i'll have a client hook me pretty good. I usually have them do the yank move. I always keep an old leader butt in my pack just for this purpose.

One of the perks for being a guide?
