When you went red fishing, what weight rod did you take with you?

Floating and sinking line?

7wt was the rod I used most. I took about 5 with me.  Rio Redfish line, great line.

Is a 9wt overgunning it?

I have a couple of 7's and 8's I could take as well.

Depends on what size reds you find. A 7 and a 9 would be my choice with a 8 for backup.  ;D

caught these on an 8 wt, running out of hopedale almost a month ago.  If an 8wt can handle a 47 pound black drum... I'd say a nine is almost overkill.  Although... it probably depends on the exact rod because an 8wt RPLXI might be overkill, but a 9wt Clearwater is probably toast.  I was using a 9'6" 8wt XP and didn't want anymore or any less.

Phil that is solid work.

Mike, you said you like the Rio Redfish, any other line recommendations from you are anyone else?

The important thing on line is making sure you have equator or tropical line if the water and air is warm. If you using trout floating line it will get gummy.

I would be weary of using rods that are to light in fear of stressing the fish.  The cooler months one does not have to worry so much about it, but the summer time it can mean death for the fish.

Phil did you guys run a long way out? We fished out of Hopedale last year but there was alot more grass.

we ran a LONG way out... probably an hour and twenty minute run.  The water was calm enough that we could cross a few sections of big open water that on a windy day you could have not come close to attempting in a flats boat.  The past three times I have been down there the water was too rough to get out that far.
