Title: Plateau Report 9-2-/9-4
Post by: dbradyh on September 04, 2011, 09:44:38 PM
We made it back down to the river after a long, hot, steep hike Friday afternoon and found the river in good shape with red horse suspended a couple of feet under the surface and smallmouth swimming lazily through them. I had high hopes for catching fish, but they seemed to be off their feed and did not co-operate. The top water bite was off and I only managed a couple of foot long smallmouth on a Mertz copper tinsel crayfish pattern.

Moved on down stream, switched over to a five inch black streamer, cast into a deep plunge pool between boulders and watched as a two foot long smallmouth came out of nowhere, flashed on my streamer and disappeared in the time it takes to read this sentence....

Tried to enjoy the rest of the day as best I could. Found some of these mussels in the tail end of a pool.
Can anyone identify these?

Ended the day with a dinner by the river.

Looks like we will have to wait until next year for better luck!

Mussel is in the Heelsplitter family.  I am guessing pink heelsplitter, but that is just a guess.

Good looking water indeed! I imagine it isn't quite that wadeable today...

I'm pretty sure Bfish's pink heelsplitter ID is correct. Wonder how they got that name?!

Brady that's gorgeous.  Thanks for sharing.
Any chance of getting a toon into and out of that area?

Fred

Great photos Brady. I'm with Fred, a point a to point b float would be awesome in that gorge.

Thanks for the species id.
Jim, the access points might be too far apart for a pontoon..... the water seems better suited for a canoe or kayak. I will do a little more research and see what I can find. A long over night float would be the best way to fish that stretch of the river. The wading can be difficult and I was only able to hit the heads and tail outs of the deep holes. Maybe next summer.........
My girlfriend Jennifer gets all of the photo credit!
