Title: My own little survey question....
Post by: mrl0004 on November 07, 2011, 12:38:10 PM
What's the bigest brown you have caught on the Elk? Put up a pic. I would like to see what's in there!

The Elk just isn't known for big fish.

True, I guess I was hoping that someone on here had caught one or two that are respectable. I have seen pics from the Elk of big browns, thought maybe someone on here might have gotten into them.

This is one from a few years ago.  I just haven't had the good fortune to land a giant.  I did see one over 10lbs come out of there back in the 90's by a guy throwing a massive crankbait.

Wow! See, I knew someone had caught one. To me, that is a giant on the Elk! Thanks for the reply.

At one time the Elk was the premier river around Middle Tn.  I wish it still was.  There are people who are being tight lipped about how good the fishing used to be on that river.  A individual on this board just caught a 18" brown a couple of weeks ago.

Good luck in your endeavors,
Icthus

I haven't fished it yet due to the distance to get there. I have an old Tennessee Sportsman from 1997 with Ernie Paquette in an article on Tn Tailwater Trout holding what looks to be around 20" bow.

You hear tales of big browns lurking around there but I personally haven't had the chance to check it out.

We fished it on 10/8 and my friend caught a brown that I measured at just over 19 inches and it was very heavy.  We quickly released her and forgot that we didn't get a picture.

Biggest one I've caught on the Elk measured 19 inches, on a clouser.  I have seen fish do "drive bys" at streamers that were significantly larger.  I haven't put enough time in on that river though.  There are definitely some browns in the 4 to 6 pound range there if someone wanted to spend some time pursuing them.  I think the problem is that big browns do most of their feeding during generation (during daytime in particular), and the Elk isn't really very fishable under those conditions.

Yea, there might be something to that. Most of the big brown pics I have seen from there, have been during daylight. So I know they're not caught night fishing. I have been trying to read books and learn when I'm not learning on the river.

Also, from an out of state trip, many of you might know where. These were not fly caught, that was before I was a fly fisherman. Man do I want to go back and wave the fly rod there!

This is the biggest brown I have been able to put my hands on; the pic doesn't do it any justice. My dad caught it last year and we guessed it to be 8 or 9 lbs. I witnessed a guy catch a big rainbow 3 years ago that was an easy 10lbs. The biggest brown I have ever seen followed my jerkbait up to the boat and turned away 4 years ago. That fish was probably close to 15lbs, he was in another league.

I caught a good size brown 3 weeks ago on the elk...biggest trout ive ever caught in my life.  I didn't get a pic though.  My guess would be between 18 inches.  As for spotting them in the water, I have seen some fish that made my heart race, but i could never get to them!
