Title: Fly line loop connector help
Post by: mrl0004 on March 05, 2012, 02:42:10 PM
I apologize for my lack of intelligence, but I recently received a new line Jarrod sent me (thanks again Jarrod!), and I am wondering what's the best streamlined loop I can put on the end of the fly line? I don't do mono or tapered leaders. I attach a furled leader directly to fly line in loop to loop. This line has no loop, so I need to make one that won't snag. Any suggestions without getting too crazy with glue, tying thread, etc?
Thanks!
Matt

Braided loops. Slide them onto the line  until the tip of the flyline is flush with or inside of the doubled portion of the loop, and put two nail knots using light (8-10#) mono, one close to the tip of the flyline and one close to the end of the loop material. A drop of super glue on each nail knot, trim up the frayed braid ends and fish.

The loops run ~$5 for a 5-pack, or you can buy a 100' spool of the material for ~$15 and a splicing needle for about $2. If you need loops for a heavy line (>8wt, #50 braid) I can set you up -- drop me a pm. I'll have enough #20 and #30 material to put loops on more flylines than I'll ever own in a couple weeks...

For the record, the material also works great for articulated flies for non-toothy fish (trout, bass, steelhead, etc.). I have a couple muskie patterns that I tied up a while back using it, and I'm not sure I'd even fish them now.

I second the braided loops.

I have some braided loops if you need them. Just let me know and I will get them to you.

And they will work for you.

When you guys say braided loops, is that the loop to loop connectors you buy that are sort of like chinese fingertraps for fly line?

Well I couldn't find any of those here (I need this rigged by Thursday) so I just spent the better part of an hour trying the nail knot. The mono would not cooperate. I will never ever attempt this pain in the ass knot again. I hope it dies and I hate it on a molecular level. I am just tying a perfection loop in the fly line and connecting the furled leader loop to loop. I'll figure out something else later........ effin' nail knot  >:(

Settle down :). Here learn this and thank me later. It's an amazing good knot even though it's stupid easy. I've used it many many times.

Tell you what, I was fishing with Mike in 2007 chasing striper and snagged on a log with my 350 grain depth charge. We couldn't get it loose so I broke off the factory installed nail knotted loop section.

Mike used a short section of mono with a perfection loop on one end and then showed me this knot to make that connection to the fly line.

Well, time has passed and that knot is still holding.

Trust it, it works well. It is basically a sheet bend.

Hope the testimony helps.

I will be in Huntsville after I pick Sam up from school, I can meet you and put a RIO loop on it or tie you a nail knot with a prefection loop, let me know if you are interested.

It's so easy you'll forget it. Learn it and keep it because it works very well. Coat the tip end of the fly line with superglue to prevent it from wicking.
