For some reason I went up the mtn with only one lens. A 50mm 1.4 non L. I don't know what I was thinking...
Chimney Tops around midnight.

Lookout at NewFound Gap After midnight. Was headed for the Dome but I had made the trip earlier that day and my ears just couldn't take another go at it. I have a head cold and the ride back down was pretty painful on my ear drums. I had to pull over several times.

After spending just a little time in the park after hours I've learned that when you're fishing and you hear something that sounds like a four legged animal... It's probably just one of these. I've seen at least four of these now and only one Bear.

And a few Wild Rainbows put a nice ending to a fantastic weekend. Even with a cold.

I used to laugh and pick fun at people spending soo much energy to catch these little gems :). Still not sure what it is about them, but I can't wait to get back.

That last pics is awesome. the rest of them are very good, too.
-
Thanks Blake.
-
Awesome photos, man!
...but I can't imagine you going anywhere with only one lens!
-
Beautiful work Mike, just beautiful.
-
Great shots Mike!!!
-
Awesome!

It's not all about the size of the fish, it's the surrounding area, thinking about how they survive with what they have, they're wild & beautiful, just like their surroundings & there ain't a freakin kayak ;)

Thanks Craig! When we going back?

Nice - love the stars at night. Chimney Tops at midnight? That would be awesome!
-
Mike, great pics! The "chimney tops at midnight" is awesome. I am guessing the coyote was just curious? They always haul ass when I see them. You do any brookie fishing around chimney tops?
-
I didn't. I did look at the trial that parallels that prong on the map after your comment. Also read about it in Casada's book. I had a nasty head cold last weekend and I just wasn't in the mood for any uphill hiking in wading gear. How is the gradient on that section? The river where the Chimney trail crosses is pretty fast and deep.
Two of the Coyote's I saw bolted and two did not. This one was licking something off the road. No telling what was thrown out of a window on that road. Also saw a grouse up on Clingmans. I had the 400mm mounted and as I stepped out to get a shot, this bird that is supposed to be an easy target shot off like a rocket. All I got was a crappy shot. Which reminds me of something. On top of Chimneys I heard a weird drumming sound coming from different locations. I've never heard this before and all I can think is that maybe it was Grouse drumming????

I'll shoot you a pm

Mike, those were grouse you heard. The park seems to be having a boom in population for them this year. They are definitely not easy to shoot with any method I've tried, camera or scatter gun. Even when you know they are there by a dogs point, they still startle you somewhat. They are the king of game birds.
-
Damn! The one I saw was in good light and all flared out. I thought I'd been told these birds were pretty approachable so I was careless in my approach. I won't make that mistake again...

I've gotten some pretty crappy shot's of them in Tellico, i think they're just camera shy, they just sit there til the lens pops up & BOOM, they're gone :-[

They might not know the difference between shotgun and camera! :P

I flushed one yesterday as I was walking along one of my old haunts. When you have a shotgun they go 90mph at funky angles. It's even worse when you don't have a dog and are trying to kick them up the hard way. This one lackadaisically flew off straight away. I shouldered my fly rod and tracked it through the birches, muttering "bang" under my breath. It must have known the difference, too.
