Title: Took my son on his first Musky Hunt!!
Post by: Yoda on February 12, 2013, 08:08:42 AM
My son Alec and i headed up to Musky country in search of his first Musky.  We got to Musky country around 4:00 Saturday evening and fished about an hour before it got to dark to see, we got one good follow, and that was enough to get Alec fired up for the next day!! We got up early the next morning and met the Yiman at the launch site. after getting the boat and canoe launched, and a quick tow up river we started our drift down.
For his first time casting a whole chicken sized fly he did really well!!!( but what else would you expect from a "Sock Monkey Ninja"!!)

I got some new ears as well ;)

We didn't catch a Musky, but we did get a few good follows, and had a great day on the water!!! Until................................................... While pulling the boat out of the water i did something really dumb!!! My son was driving the truck, and Jr and i were watching him and commenting on how great a job he was doing not spinning out in the gravel, when the trailer tire ran up my foot onto my leg and folded it straight to the ground!! We are waiting for the swelling to go down so we can do an MRI, and then i will know more,  Looks like i am off my feet for a while, so y'all get out there and fish for me!!!!

Musky Mishaps...seems something always ends up fouled.  Rotator cuff, rods, reels...good luck with the leg.  If you can't stand and cast for a while, it makes for the perfect excuse to take up trolling...which I must confess I did get an eat on recently... 8)

Bummer about your knee man!  I hope it isn't too serious - we got fish to catch.  I rarely post about my musky chasing cause there isn't much to say other than I cast a lot, but I will add a few photos to this thread.

Early starts, I love them - I really do.

A line for biscuits at 4:45 - I'm going fushing, what are these people doing?  :P

Ever seen a wake like that off a canoe?  Come paddling with me and you will - I am a fast paddler!

Seriously though, I am going to kneeboard behind Yoda's jet this summer on a skinny TN river.  It is going to be a blast!

That's all I got.  They saw more action than me.  Oh well.

Get that knee fixed up buddy!

Bring the smart ass comments, i could use a laugh!!!  As for the leg, it feels quite a bit better than it did two days ago, doctor says that's a good sign that it's probably just a sprain!!!   Thanks for the offer Fred!!!

Heal up quick!

Sounds like a great day on the water with you son even though you didn't land a fish.

Glad to hear you're feeling better, man.  Those musky trips can be rough on a feller.  Hope you get those sea legs back soon.  I'd send those Simms back and tell em a musky gotcha.

We hooked a few with several follows Saturday on the reservoir downstream from you, none landed.

Man, sorry to hear about the knee. Hope that you're not out of commission for long.

I'll second what Travis suggested; a good story sent along with your returned waders might get you some love from the company...

Yoda, I definitely think it is worth a shot.  Simms is a good company and they might just replace them for you.

Yoda, while you're at it see if Simms will retro fit your waders with only one suspender strap. :P  Cause that's how the Tide Rolls. :-*

I talked to Yoda today and he described his proud moment of watching his son do a masterful job of pulling the boat out of the Water only to have the moment forever tarnished.  Yoda it is a good idea to send them in Simms might fix them for free or pretty cheap esp since those waders aren't that old

Typical day of musky fishing:  you wake up early and fish all day for no bites, then your son backs the trailer up your leg.
Yep, typical day...

I'd send them back, the postal service is in the hole, I sent my camo guides back 3 years ago for possible pin holes in the crouch, cost me something like $45 if I remember correctly,            a 6" gash, piece of cake  ;D

Nothing is free from Bozeman that I have found, still looking, may go back this summer to investigate some more.  ;)

Speaking as a father of two and a <dammit when did I get to be this old?> grandfather of two...I can assure you that it didn't tarnish the memory...it made it unforgettable!  They'll remember it 20 years from now.

The good news is, the leg is feeling much better!! still prolly shouldn't fish for a few weeks................... (Key word is shouldn't!!) But i doubt it will need any kind of surgery!! :D

Yoda- Sorry to hear about the leg, that sux. But sounds like you are on the mend and that's a good thing.

The rest of you guys- You should be ashamed. Letting that boat just sit there for all those days without use. The least someone could do is step up and take the boat to the river. Just because Yoda can't fish doesn't mean the boat has to stay at home too...
