I have seen the Slovenia rivers in Off The Grid. I would love to fish there.

I really, really, really like marbled trout! Such a spectacular animal! Slovenia still has fishable populations of huchen, too! Only downside it that it's kind of a shame they've stuck rainbows in so many of their rivers...

While we're out there...let's fish here:

Gotta dig the music. I'll avoid the dancing speedos, though.

Been there twice on scientific expeditions, managed to get a bit of fishing in both times... it was amazing. I'm actually sitting in front of the fire writing a proposal do so some work in adjacent Russia next year!

Thanks for posting that video Mike..... spectacular landscape and enjoyed how they did not try and turn flyfishing into an extreme sport documentary.

Be sure to include a photographer in that budget.

This one is on the cheap to demonstrate proof-of-concept... but I thought you'd get a kick out of part of an email string from the other PIs on the grant. I laughed pretty hard at it.
In response to "this [the budget] will be tight, but I would rather eat spam on the boat than steak on the shore": "Omul [an endemic whitefish] is what you eat on the ship. But I did have bear once. Actually, we boiled up some of the giant amphipods also, but they were not as good as either omul or bear."

For the lenok and grayling, the same as you would throw for very unselective trout. No need to go small. Plus streamers and mice. A couple of the grayling species in western Mongolia have a much bigger and toothier mouth than you'd expect for a grayling -- they'll take large streamers quite readily. For taimen, big mice and muskie-size streamers. I wasn't adequately prepared for the first trip and wound up doing the best I could with a 6wt. Got fish up to ~1m, but couldn't interest the big guys. The second trip was mostly out in the western half of the country, where there's fewer taimen, but some crazy pikeminnow-like minnows that get huge...
It's a really, really cool place.
