Two Moons
« on: August 26, 2010, 10:04:32 AM »
27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for.............

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Get your cameras ready.

Might want to check out what snopes has to say about that before you stay up late waiting.

Mars made its closest path on aug 27th 2003!  And it was nowhere near as large as what the email boasts that circulates once in a while.  it was visible with the naked eye, but it was nowhere near the size of the moon.

In all actuality, mars gets pretty close to earth every 2 years.  and super close about every 15-17 years.  Within a few million miles of the 2003 event.  It will be a while though before its closer than 2003, I think the 2287 date is actually correct there.

I checked...you are absolutely right...sorry about that.  The email came from a co-worker...should have checked it out before posting here.

I'm gonna stay up late anyway.   ;D
Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.

But she goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.

She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.

She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.

My part-time pizza delivering gig keeps me out until 11-12 on Friday nights anyways.

I'll keep an eye out on the sky and the other on the road just incase...  ;D
