Madeira
« on: December 08, 2010, 05:11:44 PM »

When we took a couple of days to explore in northern CA back in October, at the suggestion of a friend who is knowledgeable about such things we visited a winery that I'd never heard of before - V. Sattui .  During the tasting we tried a wine that was new to me as well - something called Madeira.  Oh my goodness.  If you're not familiar with it, this is a desert wine and this particular one is simply amazing. It's like liquid candy and is a perfect match for a good after dinner cigar.  A bit on the pricey side (at least for me) and not for everyday but if you're looking for a nice aperitif for a holiday treat this would be a good one imo.  Since then we've tried a couple other madeiras but none of them even came close to this one. Sattui only sells directly (on site and online)and is not available through any other channel.

I really like Madeira but like Port, it is a finicky beast and must be aged properly to truly enjoy. Both are wonderful with a nice cigar to help the digestion after an enjoyable meal.

A couple of years ago, I was trying Ice Wines quite a bit after dinner on the weekends but the can be hit or miss and also on the pricey side.

Tim, thanks for reminding me how good these aperitifs can truly be.
